Re: When does the Gander Mnt Store open up in Evansville?

I can hardly wait until then. There was a story today in the Evansville Courier&Press newspaper talking about Gander Mountain's Opening on Oct 1st. They may have a soft opening in Sept. There was a picture of the Store Front as it looked great. Log Cabin Type Front decor.

I've heard a lot of people talking about going to Gander Mountain in outdoors forums like this one. But most of the stores they talked about were in Northern Indiana.

I want to get a chance to see this store and someday visit the Bass Pro Shop Store near Jeffersonville, IN.

I tried going to the Gander Mountain Web Site but I was not impressed with the site. It was nothing like the Bass Pro Shop web site or the Cabalas web site. They have a lot more items on their web site. Not much there except guns on the Gander Mountain Web Site. I am hoping that they carry a huge supply of outdoor equipment in the store.

I know that ****'s Sporting Goods Store does not always carry the largest supply of things. But ****'s devotes a lot of space to gulf, exercise equipment, and other sporting goods stuff like Baseball, Hockey, basketball and other stuff. Dicks does carry a lot of nice things but they carry more items on the ****'s Web site than in their store. So if you can't find it in the store you can check their Web site and get something. But Gander Mountain doesn't seem to have that much on their web site.

I think that the Location for the new Gander Mountain Store will be great as there won't be as much traffic in this area as at the Burkhardt Road and Lloyd Intersection. For those that live in Evansville know that this intersection is very congested with the Best Buy Store, Home Depot, Target, Radio Shack, Drug Store, Walmart, Book stores, McDonald's and all the the other stores that you have to access though Burkhardt Road off the Lloyd.

The area where Gander Mountain will be located will have a huge parking lot and there are fewer stores in this immediate area.

I hope that Gander Mountain carries the new Humminbird Side scanning Sonar units in the store. I'd like to see one of these things first hand and see what it can do in simulation mode someday.

Hey Moose1am, have you been by the store? It looks quite a bit like the store front of Bass Pro in Clarksville In. only smaller. I've been to the mentioned Bass Pro several times and I'm ready to go back. I am also ready for the Gander Mountain to open to see how they can supply the local fishermen.

As far as D***'s, I won't go back to that store for fishin gear, tackle or lures. Only place I've been able to find my favorite lure is Bass Pro. Wal Mart has a smaller version but I like the full size.

Re: When does the Gander Mnt Store open up in Evansville?

Yes I drove over to the new store location and got to look at the store front. It was after dark and it still looked good. Can't wait till they finally open the doors and I can shop there.

I went to D**** yesterday and purchased a laser range finder. I have 90 days before I can't take it back. I am trying it out.

I hope that Gander Mountain is a Remington Certified Gunsmith store. I have an older 1973 Remington Model 660 222 cal rifle that needs to have the trigger/safety fixed as per a 1979 Remington Recall. Remington will pay for it or I can ship it to the Remington Factory. I am hoping that I can get it fixed at Gander Mountain's new store here this Oct.

I hate to have to ship it all the way to Remington factory as that may be a lot of trouble and expense. It would be easier to have someone in town fix it while I wait. Wishful thinking.

Rajo's Gun shop will fix it but they have to ship it to the factory and I'll probably have to pay for that too.

I am in the market for a new ultra light spin cast pole to go with a new Pflueger reel that I picked up the other day.

The guys at D**** Store seem to always be more concerned about getting their stocking done than helping the customers at times.

I like to see the specs on any thing that I am about to purchase. I want to read the manual or at least look at it before spending 100 bucks on anything. The range finder cost 300 bucks and they acted like they were put out because they could not find a manual for the display unit. They had to go all the way to the front of the store to find a new unit that was stored inside a huge Safe up by the check out area. The manager had to open the safe and get a new boxed version of the range finder out so that I could look at it and check out the specs. I ended up getting the non camo one. I may see if they have the camo one and take this black one back and exchange it for the camo one. Or I may just return the entire thing and get a better one that has a lighted display. The one I got does not work at night.

I have a feeling there will be a lot of sportsmen shopping at Gander Mountain Store.

I saw on their web site that they have a lot of stuff going on with guns. Evansville can use a good gun store that can repair guns and sell them too.

It won't be too long before Oct gets here.

Moose - just to let you know Dave's Gun Shop in Holland IN is pretty good at fixing just about anything on Guns. If you ever go to Patoka or want to fish some different lakes try swinging by his gun shop. just off the Interstate about 2 miles towards Holland. then swing over and check out two of Hollands lakes. You will need a permit though. My buddies that live in Holland have taken some 6,7, and 8lbs bass out of both lakes and they catch many crappie. Tight lines

Question Re: When does the Gander Mnt Store open up in Evansville?

    The Holland lakes . . .

Where and how does a person get the permits?
    Is there a cost?

Re: When does the Gander Mnt Store open up in Evansville?

You have to go to the Water dept. which is right on their Main street, downtown Holland. Which is not very big at all. Just ask the attendent at the local Sunco gas station. When I bought a permit a few years back it was like $5. If you have a Holland water bill you can fish for free. And their one local cop (Carns) will check there periodicly and write tickets.

Re: When does the Gander Mnt Store open up in Evansville?

Thanks for the tips. I use to go up to Holland, IN when I was a kid. My grandfather lived up in Holland and I have found memories of that town as a child.

How large are the two lakes and do they have concrete launch ramps? I have a hard time getting my boat to float off the trailer. Tires are too tall and the boat is too heavy. and the back end of my trailer sits higher than the front end. I need a new truck to haul my boat someday. LOL Then I will get a new trailer hitch that will level my trailer out better. My old Truck needs new rear shocks or something to raise the back end up higher. I went to the trailer places several years back and tried to get them to install a new trailer hitch system but they said they didn't make them that would fit my truck anymore. If I had gone the year before I could have got on. My bad luck. I don't know why someone could not weld a hitch to the frame of my truck somehow. I need a class II or better trailer hitch. Right now the 1 7/8" ball is secured to my trucks rear bumper. That's why the tongue is so low and the back end of the trailer is higher. This makes it harder to get the boat off the trailer. So I have to have a good steep concrete ramp since I have two wheel drive and not four wheel drive. I something get stuck on the Launch Ramp at the South end of Blue grass pit as the launch ramp has a shallow slope and I have to back the truck's back tires into the water to get the boat off the trailer. Any little algae growing on that concrete ramp will cause my rear truck tires to slid and I may end up with the truck in the lake someday. I need to buy a come along until I can get a new truck or trailer. LOL

I have had to be pulled out by another truck one time as I kept sliding deeper into the water with each attempt to pull the truck up the concrete ramp. Wish those ramps were grooved more to give us better traction. Or wish I had a longer trailer tongue or something to make launching easier. I am thinking about adding some Teflon to the top of the 2x4's on my trailer to make the boat slide of easier. I'll be working on that I guess.

Oh and the water is so low on blue grass pit that there is now a drop off at the end of the concrete ramp where your trailer tires can drop off into. I have had my trailer tires drop off about 4" to 6" at times these past two weeks. I think that the larger boats with the bigger gas motors are trying to push their boats up onto the trailer and washing out the end of the ramp in the process.

The ramp needs to be extended a few more feet while the water is still low or the lake needs to come up higher soon. We could sure use more rain here. Or they could dump or place some rip rap rock at the very end of the launch ramp's concrete to fill up any developing hole.

Re: When does the Gander Mnt Store open up in Evansville?

I think the back lake has a concrete ramp. this is the lake I used to fish a lot. I don't Know if there is a dock or not. I have not drove back there in couple of years. However I just drove past the top lake which has its entrance at the Holland Park. They do have a Boat dock but the Ramp is a Rock ramp. I put my 18ft skeeter in both lakes with no problems but I have 4 wheel drive too, Whick I hardley ever have to use. but it is nice to have.

Re: When does the Gander Mnt Store open up in Evansville?

Holland, IN brings back many childhood memories. My dads parents lived and worked there before coming to Evansville area. I use to drive up there with mom and dad to visit my grandparents when I was a little kid.

I was falling asleep on time and mom didn't want me to sleep as I would stay up all night and she didn't want that. So as soon as I nodded of they would Shout "DID YOU SEE THAT TIGER" or something along those lines. Of course it would wake me up and I would pop my head up to look out the windows to find that deer or lion or tiger out in the fields. Of course I was too slow (according to them) to actually ever see the animal in question. But it kept me awake for a few more minutes until sleep again grabbed at me. This was repeated a few more times until we got home. I will never forgive them for lying to me like that! LOL

When I was really little (under 5 years old) they gave me a duck for Easter and that duck followed me around everywhere. I ended up taking the duck up to Holland where my Grandfather took him in and gave him a new home. They probably had it for diner after I left. LOL My Grandmother was a good cook and she was a lot of fun. I wish we had lived closer to them. I didn't get to visit with them as often as my maternal grandparents as we lived right next door to my mom's parents and they practically raise me. Even later in life I lived right down the road from them until my grandfather passed away from cancer. I use to ride the school bus home to their farm house and farm when both my parents were working. They have two or three acres of property surrounded by open fields and woods. I'd love to be back there at that time right now and be able to roam those woods and god hunting there. Today that's all been developed into new homes and subdivisions. This entire county has way too many new house now. LOL There is not room left to go shooting out the back yard like we could back in the 1960. 47 years sure has changed the lay of the land around here.

I miss those good old days when you could find good hunting grounds all around us.

Thanks for the heads up on those two lakes at Holland. I have not been up there in years. I know that I could talk my elderly mother into a trip up there to have a look around. She needs to get out of the house more often. She is living by herself and doing OK but she's getting older and it's harder for her to get around these days. I had to talk her into taking some Aleve for arthritis pain. She was starting to get pain in her hip. But she still gets out and cuts the lawn on the riding lawn more. But she is having trouble getting the engine started. I'll have to drive 40 miles out there and back just to get the mower started for her. So I think I'll just get her a electric starter mower. I bought her a snapper electric start self propelled lawn more last year from Scotties up in Warren,IN. But that thing is heavy and hard to turn around. It's easy to start if you prime it up right. I don't look forward to the day that she can't get around anymore. I will have to take care of her myself or put her home up for sale and stick her in a nursing home and I don't want that for her. She deserves to live out her life (golden years) with someone that cares for her. Those nursing homes are not the place to put an loved one. I had my dad in a nursing home for three months and if not for our family being there with him everyday he would not have survived that place. The same nursing home just dodged a criminal charges when the judge let them off the hook. If it had been a jury trial they would have all gone to jail for neglect. But this judge decided on his own to dismiss the charges that the prosecutors filed against this nursing home. I saw the neglect other patients when my dad was in this same home for three months. The guy that was in my dads room was never turned and he was bed ridden and blind. His only visitors was his only daughter who came to town to see him only one time in those 3 months. She left him there to die. I felt so sorry for him but didn't know what to do. I guess when we get old that's what some people do to the elderly. I only hope that I go quickly when it's my time. I don't want to spend time in any nursing homes l like that one. But at least he had a nice warm bed and they did feed him three meals a day. I guess there is no easy way to grow old and die. We all may not live long enough to grow old be we will all have to face death someday.
