I'd say it was about 1997 when I fished a tournament on Old Hickory and the water temps were way up there in high 80's and low 90's. It was one of the most grueling tournaments I have ever fished. To say it was hot is one huge understatement.

However, the top 4 stringers came from locals who knew the fish were shallow. I mean very shallow. I talked with one, and he told me that the fish were so far back that what he did was take his boat back as far as he could, and then cast to the even shallower water. We saw several fish that seemed to stir in the mud as if they were partially covered with mud. I was told that was how the bass did there on Old Hickory. Now I will be the first to tell you this, I have no idea if they were pulling my leg or not. I thought they were either mud fish, or mud cats that we were spooking out of the mud.

Has anyone else ever heard of such a thing? I know Jim D. said he is hearing the fish are shallow in the early mornings..... what about it?

Dave S., I would imagine you would have some insight about this as well.

I did not bite on the bait that day, but now with what Jim is saying, could it be true???

Thanks,

Danny
