Don't give up on the big lakes all together. I live on Kentucky Lake and if you come during the week, you will not have a lot of company on the water. And seeing that it is the end of September kids will be in school and most family vacations will be over. I have a couple of friends that com about that time of year and they bring kayaks and have a blast and I have never heard them complain about traffic.
