Re: Possible South Elkhorn Fish Kill

sounds like a couple of well paid folks were watching TV or online instead of being on the line. Seems as simple as building a diversion area if something like this was to happen that a manual swith could be opened to catch a good part of this. but hey I am just an old hill billy but if the slop got deep we grabbed a scoop and the boots and got rid of the S*** the way of our grandfathers.

You are seing this as i did. To add more along those lines this is the city that wanted to take the local water company over because they could do so much better. (YEAH RIGHT!) This latest accident shows how incompetent these guys are. The city was already in trouble with fines pending and now this? If this was a private company they would be sued to the highest degree. i GUESS IT'S GOOD TO BE THE KING....

Good to see those reports of things being status quo...keeping fingers crossed.

    Agree with BigPoppy and DJD...

You can see the tables above. Look at the first one. You can see the influx of water every day. I say today that slug of water will hit the main stem. You have to remember as slow as it flows it will take a while to drain into the main stem. Waters are barely spilling over dams. It would be better if we had about 2ft of water. It would push it through real fast. As it stands the slower it movers the possbility of more damage to the fishery could occur.

    We'll see....

I agree. I think it would be better if there was more water moving down the creek...all we can do is wait-n-see now.

When i called, the nice people at Canoe Ky they seemed to think that there would be little to NO affect on most of the south fork and main stem, they said the water coming through the riffles would put back oxygen into that water, they also said that that water is only about 24 hours away and that its went through already. But i guess its also hard to argue with the streamflow guages. I really, really hope that the affect is minimal to none. That creek is my favorite place to be and is just an absolute incredible area.

One thing you have to be aware of is that Canoe Ky is in it for the money. As long as the waters flowing to float the paddlers and thier Kayaks, canoes, and rafts is all they care about. It's about the money for them. And they will probably offer free toilet paper so you can wipe the chit of you "vessel".
There's another one of those that don't really take things like these serious.

Even if the oxygen levels come back up that doesn't mean the waste itself is gone. It's still coming down the creek....

I'm not going to get into a conflict on streamflow. I know what I experince as far as the watershed in my areas. It takes 24-36hours (depnding on the spike in the water level) for the water to shed from Lexington to Gtown. And then it's about 30+miles via water to the streamflow guage at Knights Bridge.
On the South Fork, it's about 25 miles from the guage in Midway to the one at Knights bridge.
I'm supposed to call a buddy of mine back in Frankfort later on today to see if anything has been updated.

Re: Possible South Elkhorn Fish Kill

I completely understand what you are saying. and i take that into account as well, i talked to them sunday evening when i saw your link on here. and what i posted, was what they said on sunday. It is kinda like when my dad used to call Old man Fryman before he passed and asked how the water looked and if the fish were biting good, before we would head out.... well he ALWAYS said the water looked good and the fish were ALWAYS biting. similar situation, fryman was tryin to make money, its business.

And I do understand that even though there may be enough oxygen for most fish to survive, it doesn't mean that there still isn't nasty stuff floating that way. I am just hoping that it isn't that bad. And i will be looking for that report whenever you have it. Thanks Billy for keeping us up to date with an unbiased view of what is going to or could happen. It is appreciated.

Man that *****. 3 million gallons over the entire town branch/south fork/main stem watershed hopefully will dilute down quite a bit. I would surmise the immediate effects would be the most horrific - hopefully long term it will do no damage.

They definitely do need to prevent it from happening again though!

Re: Possible South Elkhorn Fish Kill

Thought I had posted a report Sun. evening after my trip to Frankfort and some stops on the South Elkhorn on the way there. Evidently I did something wrong. It's not there.

Stopped at the Mill outside of Midway to look at the water. There were two guys there fishing and the water looked clear and fine. There were no signs anywhere of a fishkill.

Then I stopped and fished at the KU station on Leestown for about 40 Min.. The water was clear, no smell, and again no sign of a fishkill anywhere. I threw only plastic baits and caught several small panfish types. Had lots of small nibbles on the lures but no bass.

Went to a wading spot on the North fork near Georgetown and the water was brown, stained and I couldn't buy a bite. Now that's not below the spill so go figure.

Anyone else have any reports from any parts of the mighty Elkhorn this weekend? Thanks!

Now that's embarassing, I just realized I didn't see my post because the thread is now several pages long. Oh well.

I'm hitting Elkhorn in the morning; I'll post the results tomorrow evening. I plan on fishing down stream from where the spill was. I can't give out my honey hole though.
I was fishing stoner last month and it was good north of Paris, wadding only but we caught some nice fish. I don't know what "duck weed is" but there was some heavy moss in a couple of areas.
