Depends on what you mean by "losing power to the prop". If the boat layed down on you and would not make headway you probably had one of two things happen...either you spun out your prop hub or your lower unit went out. Basically either will cause your engine to rev up since there is no torque on the engine from the turning of the prop in the water.
Thanks for the answer dave it was a moment where the boat would slow down just a bit I have a pontoon so being on plane is not noticeable. when I slowed the throttle back a little it would not happen. after about two hours the problem seemed to stop. the boat has set idle most of the summer since my health doesn't allow me out when it is really hot but I am going to check the hub. Thanks for the leads. Dave I know you are a guide what are your rates and do you do much in the fall early winter.

hub spun, go out and see if you can turn the prop backwards while its in forward gear to make sure.
Be glad to take you out down here on the big lakes late this fall. November can be some of the best fishing of the year if the weather cooperates and I have plenty of opening in November right now.
