    New to KY, Please help!

    Hey everyone!

I have recently been assigned to FT Knox, and would like to know the best areas to catch Catfish. I have a boat and have heard that the Ohio River is one of the best places, but I don't know exactly where. I also would like to know about some of the other places (within an hour and a half driving distance) that are considered good fishing waters.

    Thanks in advance!

    -Sam

Ohio River for sure. Put your boat in at greenwood boat ramp located about 30 minuites or so from you and go up river and fish the hydros. There are places between Greenwood and the hydros that are decent as well. Cut bait always works best for me. there are a few guys on here that have good knowledge of the river and im sure they have some good advice for you. Welcome aboard and you will find some great advice and talk to some great people here. Bassking

Can't help you with catfishing, but there are several great Bass lakes within an hour and a half drive from Radcliff, Nolin, Rough, Green, Barren, and Dale (the first four are less than an hour). I retired from Fort Knox and live in Radcliff so I have fished all of these lakes.

Just wondering, with a handle like WOLVERINE, what part of Michigan are you originally from?

    Welcome to the board Sam!!

I am in Western KY and usually fish Barkley and Ky Lake, but did grow up on the Ohio over in Henderson. We caught tons of catfish as I grew up, and my grandfather had a grocery store in Henderson. I've seen several pictures where guys have caught 100 lbers and then hung them outside his store and he sold catfish steaks fresh cut on Saturdays. Now that is way back in the 20's and 30's.

Welcome to KY and I hope you have a very safe and successful stay here.

I know they catch some BIG cats in that river. I can't help much with the fishing for them though. Welcome to the board Wolverine.

Taylorsville Lake has been stocked with blue catfish since 2002, and there are supposedly blues up to 25" in there.

First let me welcome you to the board, but more importantly let me thank you for your service. I started my military career up there at olive barracks as recon over thirty years ago. I still get up there once in a while and drive by some of the pot holes that I pushed in the ground for the pleasure of one my drill seargeants. As all of the others have told you there is probably not a more central spot to be for some of the best fishing this side of the mississippi. I sugest going to the PX or Wally world and getting a copy of the Kentucky gazetter it a map book that has darn near every goat trail in the state as well as special guides section. This map book is the best resource I have found when trying to find a new hole. I do not know about the Ohio never fished it but all of the lakes mentioned by others all have spillways and all of them have cat fish in them the spillway at barren has always been a good catfish destination flat heads love this part of the river and when they hit you got a fish. while there have been no world records broken here 40 and 50 pounders happen fairly often and 5 to 20 are common for a dedicated cat man. Green river from the lake on down has huge fish the section in Edmonson county is very productive and there is some good fishing right there on post. so once again good luck and welcome to KY.

Thanks again everyone for the info. I will be scouting around today. Are there any skips to be caught right now? I am fresh out.

Grumpy, I am originally from a little town by the name of Rogers City in northern Michigan. We used to chase salmon and steelhead on lake huron.

Thumbs up Re: New to KY, Please help!

As said by others...Thank you for your service.

Use the Brandenburg, KY ramp and fish the stretch downriver towards Leavenworth, IN ramp. This stretch is a favorite for locals and tourney guys for big fish. Check the website for DuraCats to see some of their results. Cut skipjack or shad produces best for me, but all the usual baits will work. Try drifting long stretches with your baits 1-2' off the bottom. Or anchor on likely structure, such as wing dams and barge pilings. Remember to anchor above spot and cast bait behind boat.

Send me an e-mail and I'll give you some specifics. [email protected]
