Thumbs down Re: Meldalh Dam Fishing

Fishing is slow from the bank at the dam, at the wall and on the rocks down river. Watch the river level from this rain that we are supposed to get, if there is a decent jump things should pick up. I checked the meldahl site and the water temp is around 80-83. The meldahl pool not cinci is around 13.50. it is in low water conditions so that means gate number twelve, the 1st gate on kentucky side is running typically when this is going on the white bass hybrid are slow. The gate I'm talking about usually is craked, not opened to where if you throw a 3oz spoon in the gate it will push it out in about 3 seconds. I hope this can help a little for you

    Re: Meldalh Dam Fishing

    EZGO,
I fish there alot but never have fished directly below the dam with spoons, close to the buoys.
Care to elaborate a little more on how to hook up with some hybrids or stripers? I have caught a few on crankbaits fishing the ohio side rock banks and close to the sand bar on Ky side. Any info would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Bassky

    Re: Meldalh Dam Fishing

bassky I fish there all the time from the bank. The key to fishing for these In my opinion is current and water level. Also spoons are not the key for me all the time down on the rocks or 200 yds away from dam are jigs from a 1/4-to 1/2 oz with a white shad body. Typically I use 3/8 - to 1/2 oz. But them white 3 inch shad bodies or swim baits can be picked up at marathon on AA highway. If the current is pushing towards the dam thats where I will fish or where current starts to pick up. Another good thing to watch for is a split in the current like where current is pulling towards the dam and pushing towards cincy. I am no pro at this but I fish there alot and these things are what works for me. When you fish the rocks down there try to graph the ledges humps and stuff thats where I pick some fish off of, and look for the water to be 18 to 21 feet meldahl pool. To me thats when the hybrids and whites come in closer.

I have only fished at Meldah once, so can't give you any specifics for that area. In general, Hybrids, Stripers, and White Bass like: 1) current; 2) low light periods of the day; and 3) shad. Get all three together and you have a good area. Hit the current, edge of current, current seams, and places that break up the current. All three species are schooling fish (will sometimes all school together) and like areas where they can heard shad, trap them in an area, and go to town on them.

I fish from a boat most of the time . I have a traga tracker. I am looking forward to the sauger season. If the river stays like it is it should be a great season. We catch most of our sauger with jigs tipped with minnows of just minnows.Happy hooken
