    Unhappy Warning (Halcombs Landing)

    The new ramp at the dam is not being used at this time. It seems they were too many people dropping off the end of it with their trailors, therefore they shut it down. The old ramp, they have managed to completely screw it up by cutting in and putting a SOFT LOOSE gravel drive going down the hill. On top of that the loose gravel is getting down on top of what LITTLE asphalt they left and is making it a skating rink for rigs. If you have only a two wheel drive truck as I do I strongly urge you to launch somewhere else, it's horrible. Four wheel drives would probably do OK, but still not good, I like to never got out of that hole, lol. So let's recap, the COE buit a monster state of the art ramp that nobody can use because they didn't make it long enough, LOL. Do you think that subject might have come up in the planning, LOL. Then in their eternal wisdom they went and A bombed the good ramp you could actually use. LOL. My rant is over but take great caution if you decide to go launch there especially in a two wheel drive vehicle.

    I posted on this before, I can not believe they did not build the ramp out farther. And they left some pretty good boulders near the end of the ramp, so watch your lower unit when you do get to put in.

    Thanks robert, I haven't yet been able to use the NEW ramp as it is always closed when I'm there, lol. I can only hope they aren't done with it yet, surely not. Even though I'm hearing it is from locals down there. WHY, WHY did they do that to the existing ramp, what earthly purpose did that serve. It's like they are eventually trying to run everybody off until they are done. Even though that little ramp was not in their way, Im lost on this deal. Now I just drive back that roller coaster ride for 4 miles to the Pumpkin Creek ramp, which by the way is in excellent shape.

    Have had 0 problems with the ramp at Halcombs since it was finished. Haven't been there since they finished the parking lot though. Pumpkin creek is good to go? Thats normally where we like to put in at in the winter anyways...

    Again maybe I wouldn't have any problems with the new ramp either if it was ever open when I'm there to use, lol.

    Gentlemen,
    I have been following this string with interest since I normally launch in November at Halcombs due to courtesy dock being easier to load/ unload bass boat by myself. I would simply launch next to the courtesy dock and be able to get in the boat from the dock. I tow an 18 foot Ranger Bass boat on a Mercury Grand Marquis. Not at all good on gravel covered ramps.
    I am familiar with the Pumkin Creek ramp and it's more difficult alone.
    Is the original ramp at Halcombs useable for my vehicle? Is the courtesy dock still close enough to the ramp to use?

    Last time I was down there (couple of weeks ago) two wheel drive trucks were not coming out with boat attached. Several folks had to unhook and get help from a 4x4 or other creative towing tricks. I know this isn't what you wanted to hear. Sorry.

    Like birdstrike said, DON'T TRY IT. You will be sorry in a two wheel drive truck if you do. The corp are a bunch of educated idiots in my opinion. They built a new ramp you can't use, THEY WON'T EVEN LET YOU TRY. Then they totally and completely destroyed the very usable ramp that was there. Put in at Pumpkin it's a piece of cake, I do it by myself all the time. Put in, tie up to courtesy dock, park truck and away you go. Jamestown is fine too if you don't mind that two mile walk up and down that billy goat hill, LOL.
