The smell of a predator fish can drive schools of shad into tight schools which make feeding easier.
Shad are made up of amino acids and the injury of a shad can release amino acids into the water attracting predator fish. Bass can detect concentration of amino acids around 2,000 ppm. They can also detect shad odor 25 ft away.
Bass use a "snake-like" motion to track an odor source. Migration to certain feeding areas is also a function of the bass's scenting abilities.
Bass can also distinguish between plant life by smell and establish territorial
boundaries. Smell also plays an important role in reproduction to stimulate hormones which trigger certain reproduction actions.
