Usually the fall feeding frenzy starts when the water temperature fall below 65 degrees, and the range is from 55 to 65 degrees. Weather conditions can affect how long this period last. I would say when the water temperatures of your favorite lake gets to 65 degrees you might want to be on the lake as much as possilble so you are there when it occurs. Again, I would follow the shad during this time. Streams and rivers will cool faster usually so you have to be ready. I keep a electrical monitor with a temperature prob to monitor temperatures at different depths. This way not only can you monitor surface temperatures, but you can monitor thermocline temps as well.
