INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The Indiana Department of Natural Resources says a record-breaking longnose gar has been caught in the Wabash River.
The fish weighed 19 pounds, 4 ounces, and was nearly 55 inches from lip to tail. It was caught in southwest Indiana's Posey County on October 10th by Kevin Huber of New Harmony.
Longnose gars are primitive-looking fish with a long snout studded with sharp teeth.
Indiana's previous record longnose gar was caught in the White River in Pike County in 2004. It weighed a little over 18 pounds.
Wow , I think I will start fishing for Gar ! Why a trash fish record makes the news in mystery to me . I have caught these toothy critters fishing the river nad some backwater lake - the fight hard but are still a trash fish , no good to eat and a vious predeator .
