Shimano Reel Service????????

I have a few of the older curado's and 2 Japanese version reels that i want to have serviced. They all work great just need a good cleaning and re-lube. I have one reel that has given me a problem since using it to catch a bunch of big hydrids below markland dam this spring. The anti-reverse is messed up in it i think. If i pull the line in short jerks then the spool will free spool on it own and backlash the reel. i found this out the hard way trying to pull through the grass at Kincaid a couple weeks ago. I had my jig hung in the weeds and jerked to pop it loose and backlash city. I thought maybe it was me but then did it again later and it was a real bad one. I checked teh reel out and noticed the short pull thing will make it release the spool so i would like to get it fixed. Thanks for replies in advance.

You can actually send your reels back to Shimano and usually can get them fixed and cleaned and even have parts replaced. they USUALLY charge just a flat rate around $30 for each reel.

I called shimano this summer to get my reel serviced and they said 7 weeks to be back in my hand from the day shipped! I got it to The Reel Man and it was back in a week and felt brand new again. He's taken care of a few of my friends before as well. They were all pleased. His rate for just cleaning is about $15 or so.

My shimano reels do the SAME thing...........antireverse jacks up, and sometimes has real problems in the cold...........

This is easy to fix, and you can probably do it yourself, if you are handy and feel comfortable taking the reel apart........Now, I'm doing this from memory, so some steps might be missing.......

The anti-reverse bearing is a one-way rod type bearing in a housing on the HANDLE side of the reel.

Take the handle cover off, and the locking mechanism, and then the handle. Make sure you take these off in order, and lay the parts out.

After the handle, there is another nut, and a couple washers, these washers are a little gritty. Make sure you take notice to the way they are formed, as I think it is important they go back on the reel the same way they came off.

After this stuff, you can see the rod bearing and the casing I'm talking about.......Remove the handle side faceplate, and then you can "push" this bearing out of the faceplate. Use some GOOD solvent, white gas, brake cleaner, etc, etc, to clean the gunk off this bearing, and then apply a couple drops of oil, and put it back in the reel.

while you're at it, remove ALL the sealed bearings you can see, clean them with brake cleaner, add a drop of oil, and put back in the reel.

This will take you about 20 minutes per reel..........I've been doing this myself for YEARS, and it saves be 20$ per reel. when you add that up for each reel, it saves me about 200 bucks/year in maintenance costs...........

Now, if you NOT sure about doing this yourself, you can definitely JACK up your equipment, but the job is not too hard, and pretty much anyone with a small set of screwdrivers, a couple wrenches, and some time can do it.

BTW.........the same thing happens with their spinning reels, and you can use the same method to fix those..........

Like Geo said, it's not hard to clean them. The hardest part for most people is remember how to put everything back where it belong the correct way. If you're not familiar with it then examine it carefully before you start taking it apart. Depends on the condition of the bearing, you might have to replace it. I have a couple of the cheap Quantum and they do the exact same thing with the anti-reverse. I cleaned the heck out of it and still have problem.
