Mercury motors

No Mercury did not stop making an EFI in 150 hp. From what I have heard the only difference between the EFI and Optimax is the fuel mileage. The best wayto find the information that you want is to talk to a dealer or order a brochure from mercury. There will be plenty of dealers at the boat show in Lex Jan 31- Feb 3.

Starting in 06 all motors had to pass the 3 star EPA emissions law. Mercury EFI and Yamaha 0X66 are no longer in production. They now make a more enviormently freindly DFI motor Mercury Optimax Yamaha HPDI. Evinrude has never made a fuel injuction motor...Ficht is a DFI motor but they have redesigned that motor and it is now called Evinrude E tech.

To clarify the differance between EFI and DFI. An EFI basically was similar in fuel flow design as the carburated. The oil and fuel was mix then sprayed into the crankcase buy an injector instead of being pulled through the carburator.

DFI is a Totally different fuel dilivery system...each cylinder has an fuel injector and oil injector that independtly sprays fuel and oil. It is All computer controlled. The injectors only spray oil and fuel at the precise time the cylinder needs ignition and lubrication resulting in a more fuel efficent burn. In return that is why a Optimax HPDI and Etech are the most fuel efficient motors AND the only 2 stroke motors that can pass the 06 EPA standards.

If your looking at a smaller horsepower motors that are produced after 06 it is going to be a four stroke. They can pass the 06 EPA law. They do make large horsepower 4 strokes but they do not have the bottom end tourque as the 2 stroke and lack some top end speed. The 4 stroke is a good motor but on a large heavier hulls people will prefer the 2 stroke.

Carburated= no longer in production after 06...poor fuel economy and high exhaust emissions

EFI= came out mid 90s. has a little better fuel economy than carburated and fewer exhaust emissions but not good enought to pass the 06 EPA 3 Star rating...no longer in production

DFI= Ficht came out late 90s and was followed buy Optimax and HPDI...the most fuel efficent and lowest emission motors.The only 2 stroke motors that can pass the 06 EPA standards

For the record...you can still run a carburated or EFI motor on your boat. The emission law only pretains to motors Produced after Jan 06. So if you find a boat with one of those motors and you like it that will be fine.

They may be no longer in production, but are still available. The new Nitro Z-7 comes standard with a 150 efi and many of the other Tracker and Nitro boats have 50 and 90 elpto motors as standard or optional equiptment.
