reply to the smack lure post

The deep runner lures, thus far were unimpressive for stripers running bait on top. that being said. i did have a good report for the same lure shallow model up the north fork for stripers when the water was clear for stripers. My two cents which means absolutely nothing the deep runner action seems to about the same as a bassin shad from bagley. That being said next summer, if it kills walleye trolling i will have crow in my mouth. It was stated on the package that it could be used for muskie, but they seemed also to be not intrested with several miles of reeling compared to the jointed little erine which also caught bass on Green. Again just my opinion

I generally use the shallow runner, casting to the bank or trolling it behind a dipsy diver....works very well for stripers and walleye. I think they are now making it in a smaller version as well for bass, but I haven't tried those. I have caught fish on the deep diver also, but I don't use it as much. The shallow runner has out-fished every other bait that we've thrown in the past year and a half. Get it around a striper and he'll eat it. I also caught a HUGE smallie on the Gizz 4 while striper fishing. I've even converted a few family members when I've been catching stripers and they are blanking with other crankbaits. Now if they would only come out with a blade bait that you could cast a mile.

I guess I throw the shallow model most of the time because of all of the fish that I've caught on it. Truth be known, I probably haven't given the deep runner an equal chance, except in the early spring. Troll it close to the bank while the fish are in the creeks without a weight.

I've caught some good stripers on the shallow one. You can pull one behind a planer board up close to the bank and catch all sorts of fish but especially walleye at dusk. The stripes love the red and white one at night. The big hybrids in the Ohio River go nuts over it too along with largemouth and even sauger. It's a fun bait to throw when they are shallow. I haven't tried the deep runner much.

Can you tune a gizz4. Ive got 2 of them a shallow and a deep and both tend to run on their side. Using a glass cranking stick with a 5:1 reel..

I haven't had to tune one but you should be able to. I know the manufacturers stand by their bait and will probably replace them if there is a problem. I doubt you are crankin too fast with a 5:1 reel.
