Not bad at all, good report. I have never fished Herrington in my life and say I'm going to every year and never do it.

Well I couldnt stand it anymore after not doing so well at Cland the last two trips, and after seeing (Wormin' , I think) someone post about catching bass on cranks at Herrington, I decided to take off and go this morning. I had never fished Herrington in the winter before.
Put in at Coffeys Cove (Keys) and went straight to the Hogback. Water was clear and it was not much wind. Bass were busting shad on the surface everywhere. I caught two in the first 15 mins on a rattlin rogue, just lettin it sit still for a long while. Both fish were 2.5-3 lbs, good sized bass. I short lined two more I should have had. Then I went to Gwinn and hit the left point going in and took two more on a Bagley's fat shad. One was 14, one was a little bigger, maybe 15. The shad were spread out in little pockets and it was mostly run n gun. About 11, I went to a reddish muddy bank on the opposite side of Dunn from the dock. It had some big rocks here and there and caught 2 more on a #7 shad rap. Seemed like the 8lb clear line on the spinning outfit was better than the 10lb mono I had on the baitcaster I was throwing some bigger cranks with (DT 10, Bomber, etc)
Seemed to be two things going on today: the morning bite was topwater around shad (rogue worked), they were in the jumps, but it shut off real quick, about 8:15 or so. I wish Id got there a little earlier. Also, once the sun got up, they were on the red mud banks with spaced out rocks. All fish were caught in shallower water (20 ft or less) on shad colored crankbaits that ran med-deep, reeled slow. They didnt bust it, just gently took it and started running. Fish were caught at Hogback, Gwinn and Dunn.
It was a good day to be on Herrington, I didnt see a boat all day. 6 bass on the whole in 4 hrs fishin.

Thought Id liven this up since people talkin about goin to Herrington.. anyone else fishing it?
How deep are the shad?
Just deep enough for a fly.![]()
I fished it last yr. The only problem was when I went the shad were 25+ ft deep. And the last was flooded so to speak. We had the water temp, but the water depth fluxuation, the fish stayed deep. Were caught a few....but with the location of the shad we were fishing the right spots, but not nearly deep enough. 10-16ft is doable for me.
BIlly
Come on man, We can take a 6 ft step ladder put it on the deck of the boat, 12 ft leader is now a 24 ft leader. Not giving away to many secrets am I. The fish are down there and they are hungry. CHOMP..
