Just Thought I'd Through A Question Out There To Stir Up Some Ideas.......where Would You Consider To Be The Best Large Mouth Fishing In The State?
From My Little Experience As An Amateur Bass Fisherman, I Would Say That I've Had My Best Days On Rough. The Spawn On Rough Has Been Good To Me In The Past Few Years, Not Only With Numbers But Size Of Bass. I Know There's Better Out There.....i Just Haven't Gotten To Them Yet! Anyways......just Curious. Keep Your Lines Tight!
I would say Kentucky Lake. For overall fishing of several different species of fish.
My take is just about anywhere during the Spring. I always heard about Kentucky Lake in the Spring when the yellow flowers are up but never was fortunate enough to experience it.
My vote goes to Kentucky or Barkley. Catch them on the right spring day and it's nothing to catch 50 fish. My best trip ever for LM was on Barkley. We found the right bait, right presentation, and right area--for 2 days, we drifted a 400-yard stretch over and over, and not once on any pass did we fail to catch a bass over 2 pounds.
Other than farm ponds, which I think our next state record will come from, I think it's KY and believe it or not I've had great success at Dale hollow. I think everybody going to Dale targets the brown fish, with it being deeper the green fish are overlooked...there's my 2cents
i've always heard Kentucky too, but have never fished it. Maybe when i get a boat i'll be able to have more input.
Kentucky Lake. During late march - early june it is tough to beat in numbers and size. Last year was my first spring living down here, and it made the move well worth it. I miss my 20+ smallmouth days on the elkhorn with a fly rod, but the consistent fishing in the spring on Ky and Barkley have made me get over that pretty quick. I can't wait until the spring!!!!
DJD you should try to get down here and give it a try when the water gets up in the yellow flowers, it is still not a given to catch fish, but odds are you will.
With the amount of tournaments on the lakes in the spring, I try to stay away from fishing on Saturdays, unless I am in a tournament. If you were going to fish on a saturday in the spring, I would check the KDFW tournament site to make sure you weren't trying to launch with 200 other boats.
Rough has got to be my favorite, year round lake. However KY Lake can't be beat in pre-spawn conditions.
I grew up on Kentucky and Barkley Lake, and can't think of anywhere else better in the state. It makes it hard to wanna fish anything else, being spoiled like that...but if I had to chose another lake besides Ky and Barkley, it would be Barren. To me, Barren is kind of like a mini-Ky Lake.
I have fished several of them; not had huge success on any because of still being relative new to the game. Having said that, anywhere I can go is the best lake for me that day. If I had my druthers though I would go to Barkley and Kentucky Lake. They are so big and there are so many places to fish.
Being from Louisville; Rough is the best due to the distance.
I like Nolin the best of all the Lakes I've fished since moving to the State. Moved here from Indiana and used to fishing all the grass in the Hoosier water, but hardly no grass here in KY......
I Guess Everytime We've Headed Down To K-lake, It's Been For Paper-mouths Not Green-backs.....we'll Have To Stay An Extra Day This Spring And Hit The Bucket-mouths! I've Never Heard Of "when The Water Gets Up Into The Yellow Flowers".....sounds Like That's The Time To Hit K-lake!
I Agree That The Next State Record Will Probably Come Out Of A Farm Pond....i Know That Several Of My Largest Big Mouth Have! With The Exception Of The 11.7 I Caught In July @ The Peabody Wildlife Reserve Near Beaverdam Ky! It Was A Haus! Got To Love The Red Shad Culprits!
