    Angry Rod_Reel Iced Over!

Here's a question for the group, " How do you prevent ice build up on your rod guides and reel during freezing weather?". Note, staying home doesn't count...He...He.

I have read of putting vaseling or chapstick (vaseline lip balm), Pam cooking spray and Stanley Ice Off paste (what ever that is) on the guides, but have never tried any of them and don't know how effective they would be. Have also read an article which suggested coating your line with silicon to prevent build up. Any comments, suggestions, additions on these.

    Thanks and Good Fishing,
    Gary

    Re: Rod_Reel Iced Over!

When I was " Able " to fish in cold weather, I just dipped my rod into the water to thaw out the eyelets and kept on fishing....... The water was usually a lot warmer than the outside air temp.....

Pam cooking spray works well for me, but it gets pretty sticky if you don't wipe it off when your done. Just spray on rod guides and your good to go, I don't believe that I would do it on my reels just because of the mess.

Once the weather gets below freezing my rules are:

    1. leave the baitcaster at home
    2. bring a fire starter (when fishing from bank )
    3. see no. 1

I believe that I will be at Cannelton saturday morning early to get a good spot to sauger fish. Should be pretty crowded

Get a bottle of Reel Magic and spray your eyelets and reel. Works well when really cold. Stay away from braid when its really cold as the fabric holds water and freezes much easier.

I'll second the braided line comment. Stay away, far away from that stuff when it's below freezing. I tend to put a lot of grease on my reels after a good cleaning and when that grease gets cold it gets think. I've found that a little WD40 is in order in the winter time. Not much you can do when it gets TOO cold. When I was a kid I could sit on a bucket in Minnesota and ice fish all day in the dead of winter. Never had a problem with the real freezing up - so I guess them crazy northerners got some tricks up their sleeves.

I never have that problem. My garage usually stays around 50 during the winter - which is where my rods stay when it is this cold. I got to give it up to you guys that get out there when it is in the 20's and even below that. Dedication! I have tried several times down here, but Ky lake and Barkley are not too cooperative for me during the winter.

I have heard the reel magic works good when it is below freezing.

On Sunday in 10° weather, dipping the rod into the water every other cast did the trick.

The only other issue I had was that the air was so cold that some of the line was kind of freezing up on the reel and getting tiny beads of ice on it. When I'd flip the bail, often several fee of it would fall off the spool.

    Re: Rod_Reel Iced Over!

the post above is correct the Blakemore Reel and Line Magic works very well. You spray it on your eyelets and the line. You won't have near the problem with freezing any more. the dipping the rod in the water works but it just means you are going to have to keep doing it.
