I use Pam and spray all the guides, although I use one of my "cheaper" rods in the winter, it works really well. I wouldn't spray anything like that on my expensive rods. Not sure if it would hurt them or not, I just won't do it.

Here's a question for the group, " How do you prevent ice build up on your rod guides and reel during freezing weather?". Note, staying home doesn't count...He...He.
I have read of putting vaseling or chapstick (vaseline lip balm), Pam cooking spray and Stanley Ice Off paste (what ever that is) on the guides, but have never tried any of them and don't know how effective they would be. Have also read an article which suggested coating your line with silicon to prevent build up. Any comments, suggestions, additions on these.
Thanks and Good Fishing,
Gary

I've seen Bill Dance used the Reel Magic stuff. He sprayed it on the spool and guides and said it works pretty good.
Any petro base like KY-Jelly,Pam etc. will work and not hurt your rod. I personaly use Vasoline. Swab it on with a Q-Tip and your good to go. If you use solvent base materials it may hurt your rod blank. I say may cause I don't do it. I have been building rods a long time and have seen the effects of some solvents.

I just stick the whole thing in the water and then give it a good shake when you pull it out. The water will loosen or melt the ice.
