Want to try for Sauger

I have been reading about sauger fishing and am eager to give it a try. It appears that most of the action is up on the Ohio. Are there any places close to Owensboro that hold promise? Are there any worthwhile spots closer to BG? I've never been out in a boat this time of year so I will most likely be shorebound. Also, any advice on technique/tackle would be appreciated.
Might even give it a try this weekend

Brian, you might PM Rudypoo444 as he fishes the dam at Cannelton on the Ohio (located south east of Owensboro and not to far from Lewisport, KY).

As for technique/tackle, I use either a carolina rig with large shiners and jig it almost constantly OR if I am in the right place I have caught a fare number of nice sauger by vertical jigging a silver spoon. Others that I know have good luck casting small white grub or curly tail jigs.

I'm sure others on the board have their own techniques which are productive for them.

PS, I may go sauger fishing below the dam at Newburgh this Sunday and if so I will be using shiners and maybe casting a jig or silver blade bait (Silver Buddy) from the shore.

I have been fishing the Cannelton dam for several yrs. There are always several bank fishermen present. I believe they get there by using the Willamete(sp) entrance to the paper plant. Could be wrong on that. It's better to ask someone. If you go this Sun. I'll see you there. I'll be in a grey Lowe bass boat, wave and say Hi. Several methods are good up there, jig and minnow, blade baits, carolina rigs, but most bank fishermen seem to like the live bait on a snelled hook about 12" up the line. Probably 3/8 or larger sinker,depending on the current. Good Luck! ps. There is a good bait shop in Hawesville, close to the ramp, he'll give you all the advice you need.

I will be heading out to visit my brother in Evansville next weekend and may be able to convince him to try the Newburgh dam area. I'll visit a map site or two to zone in on the Cannelton dam area for a future trip. I'll definately post a follow up when I go.

If you plan on fishing Newburgh Dam from the bank, you will need to drive over to the Kentucky side and fish on the "wing wall". If you are in a boat, then you can launch at either or these two Indiana ramps; Newburgh (unless the river comes up) or Angle Mounds. Neither ramp has a dock this time of the year, so be prepared to deal with the current getting the boat in and out of the water! As a last resort, you can launch out of the Alcoa dock at Yankeetown into the creek, then go down river and lock through the Newburgh dam.

Sorry it took me so long to get to this thread

Scaly, I fish both Newburgh and Cannelton for sauger quite often, and I might be able to help you out. I have been fishing mostly Cannelton here lately, and the fishing from the beach below the dam has been phenomenal. I am using a 1oz triangle weight attached to the end of my line, and two crappie hooks above the sinker at about 8 and 12 inches. I am also having good luck with a 3-way swivel rig using the same sinker and hook setup.

One thing to remember at Cannelton is, when the water is between 16-20 ft at the dam, the fish stay close to the shore. But when I was there Friday, and the water was at 13-14ft, the fish were much further out.

I just get my minnows at the bait shop in Hawesville, and I usually don't run out getting 3 dozen.

You can also catch sauger fishing 3-4 inch grubs in various colors and 1/4oz jigheads fishing around the rocks next to the dam. This method seems to be more popular at Newburgh than at Cannelton, but it can be done at either place.
