    Smile Sauger Sunday

My buddy and I fished Cannelton today and absolutely had a blast. We caught about 40 sauger and kept the limit. Some of them were big sows, 2-3 lbs. There must have been 20-25 boats and if all of them had the luck we did there were some happy fishermen. We found them in about 40' of water and had the most luck on jigs with a trailer hook and a minnow attatched. Hope I can get back this week before the river gets screwed up again.

    Thumbs up Re: Sauger Sunday

Thanks for the report. After reading your report, I was pumped and went to Newburgh today and it was just the opposite for me. (See my post Super Sunday/Black Monday). Still, great to know some are catching fish. Maybe I should give Cannelton a try, but I suspect it would turn out to be one of those "you should have been here yesterday"..Ha.. Ha.

    Good Fishing,

    Re: Sauger Sunday

Rap, there is a nice ramp in Cannelton. It is directly across the river from the Hawsville ramp. The **** is about 3 miles upstream. Most sauger fishing is done on the Ky. side. When you get in the area around the **** there will be a sand bar on the ky. side. I would look for other boats and try in the near vicinity, trying not to crowd in to close. If I had to give you just one tip it would be to use a jig/stinger with a minnow, let it hit bottom and keep it slowly moving. The sauger that we caught were hitting very lightly, sometimes the line just got tight. Hope this helps and if I can be of any other help just contact me. Good Luck and let me know how you did!!

    Question Re: Sauger Sunday

    Gar,
With the rise in water level and associated muddy water along with it, what has been your experience relative to sauger fishing? I have been told, they don"t bite when the river is muddy! Don't know, other than a couple of times when it was muddy, I went and did't get a single bite (fishing along the lock wall at Newburgh). Was it the muddy water, high water or just chance? What do you think water clarity has to do with the sauger bite.

Any one else want to comment what gives a good/bad sauger bite, please post your comments!!!!

Good Fishing To All.... Get those Saugers!

Went to Virtual Earth and could see boats lined up along the Ky side. Looks like that is the place to try.

    Re: Sauger Sunday

Boone, It's funny that you would ask that question. We went back yesterday, the river was rising, the water was becoming muddy and we could hardly get a bite. Caught one very large sauger and several "cigars." There was a lot of debris catching on our lines indicating the fast rise. This happened to us earlier this yr. So, I would say that rising muddy water does have a definite effect on the sauger bite. It's been my experience that the quick rise has more of an effect than does the off colored water.

Drove down to Hawsville to check things out. Stopped at the bait shop and talked to the owner. Looks like he can get a guy setup pretty well for the river. Hope to get down there Monday.
