Fishing report

2-9-08 - Took advantage of the 50 degree weather and hauled the jon boat to a buddy's lake . The rains resently have really stained most local waters and the temps are still very cold but need to get out of the house . Fished with minnows & meal worms with no luck on panfish . Tried a Yamamoto Senko weightless and caught a nice 18" bass which fought very hard for the water being as cold as it is . Hooked another 14" bass but it threw the hook at the boat . Tried out the Fish TV underwater camera I got at Gander Mnt but the heavily stained water made it hard to see anything . The wind was really blowing hard by afternoon making boat control a real pain . If it gets warmer next week maybe Ill try some area stipper pits which have much clearer & deeper water so the camera will see more and use garden worms instead of meal worms . The bass I caught today was showing signs of eggs and her lower lip was really red for some reason but otherwise she was very healthy .

did you catch them on the bottom? With this warming spell they may be moving shallow to take advantage of the Relative warmer water along the shorelines and shallow flats especially if the shallow flats have submergent vegetation. Vegetation will provide oxygen, cover to hide in and plenty of food in the form of minnows, snails, and other critters that might wake up with the warming water temperatures. A few degrees warmer water can make a huge effect on the fish in the spring time. And we are having a mild winter so far. I suspect that spring time weather won't be far away this years.

I am watching TV or listening to the TV in the background right now. I like to listen and watch the History Channel. They have a program about the "Little Ice Age" which occurred back in the 1300's not long after the fall of the roman empire and the dark ages that followed the fall of the roman empire.

Evidently all it took was a 4 deg AVERAGE drop in temperature to kill a lot of humans. The crops failed and people starved to death. They say that the Little Ice Age was the cause of the French Revolution in the 14th Century.... 1300's. I think they were right.

Global warming can be created by a 4 deg INCREASE IN AVERAGE Global Temperatures. Humans are very succeptable to global average climate changes evidently. During the relatively warm weather before the little ice age the worlds human population went from 40 Million to 60 Million. Many humans died during the little ice age episode.

I bought a wind sock two years ago but never used it much as the lakes on Bluegrass F&W area are not that large.

I picked up a bouy system to use with my wind sock. This allows me to disconnect the wind sock if I get a fish on and the bouy is bright Orange and allows people go go back to find the drift sock after landing the fish.

I think I might need two drift socks to slow my aluminum boat down in high winds. One small Min-Kota Drift sock don't slow my boat down very much. I need more drag in the water. LOL My boat scoots across the water in high winds. I guess it catches a lot of wind and it's light weight so the wind can really effect it.

I tried tying the drift sock to the back of my boat. I have two handles on the back end of my boat, one on each side. So I tied a ski harness to both handles and then tied the drift sock to the center. This harness was one that I used for waterskiing behind my Fishermarine Water Stider III bass boat. I found that I could ski using a 35 HP Johnson Outboard motor with the right prop pitch. And my wife at the time and her young daugher were easy to pull up as they didn't weight much. 120 lbs tops for the wife and 90 lb tops for my step daughter. Even I could ski behind my boat using my old wooden skies. These skies are pretty large and have a lot of surface area to help get me up. But back then I didn't weight more than 180 lbs. Today my 235 lb body would have a much harder time getting up even on two big wooden skies. LOL

One of the reason the wood on the back deck is rotten is because of all the water that got on the deck from the kids and wife climbing up the back of the boat and dripping water on the back deck. I'll have to replace most of that wood someday. I already had to replace the wood inside the door that covers the deck and gives me access to the gas tanks below the deck. That was the port side of the back deck where everyone came aboard and dried off . So that side of the back of my boat got wet more often.
