    OUCH!!! That hurt..

I was watching Fishing with Keith Warren a few minutes ago and he was fish Lake Huetas(sp) in Mexico with a guy named Mark Davis, avid angler Mark Davis not the Pro Mark Davis. Mark is slow rolling a 1oz spinnerbait and hooks into one that is 7 or better, gets it right to the boat and just as he is about to lean out an lip the fish it jumps and spits the spinnerbait and hits Mark in his Left eye. Luckily, he was wearing polarized glasses, which the impact broke out the left lense and you see it flying off into the water. That could have ended a fishing trip in a bad way. I have always hated lipping fish especially with crankbaits and pretty much net or swing in everything. I could not imagine what a crankbait or spinnerbait hook could do to the eye or face if it impacted like this one did. The worse I ever got was at Ky Lake a couple of springs ago. Early spring and I was flipping shallow cover in Woody's Cove with a lizard when I hooked "Big Momma". She came up then went down and wrapped me around the buck brush. Yeah, probably I never should have flipped that far back into the junk, but my motto is "Never on then Never in". I went in after her with the trolling motor acting more like a chain saw than a trolling motor. I see her and reach under water with my left hand trying to lip her but she would have no part of this. Some how she got off but left the hook in my left thumb. So now I am wrapped around the buck brush with my big behind half in and half out of my boat. Luckily my scissors were close enough that I cut the line and un wrapped myself. Hook was buried past the barb, first day of a 4 day trip so there is not chance of seeking medical attention, pushed the barb thru, cut it off and removed the hook. Took duct tape and paper towels to wrap and fish the rest of the day. Had a great day, took out at dark and went and found some sterile bandages for the thumb. Fished the next 3 days with 9 fingers and one sore thumb and it took forever for that to heal up. I did use the sore thumb to lip them all when removing the hooks and the duct tape exterior helped a lot. If she wasn't a really good shot of a fish of a lifetime, then maybe I don't go in after her, but she was a really good fish. I would probably do the same thing again if it happened, but when they get close to my boat it either the net job or the swing job. Not taking one to the face like this guy did. He was not hurt and his glasses saved him from some really serious trouble if that spinnerbait hits him directly on the eye.

I was hit by a 1/4th oz jig in the glasses one day by my partner who had the jig hung over a stump, and if I hadn't had glasses on, things could have been a lot worse. You can put a lot of pressure on with 30 lb braid.

In 07 I hit my buddy in the back of his head on a swing and a miss with a buzz bait, a few cast later hit him with a 15 inch LM that hit the buzzer at the boat, I set the hook a little to hard on that one but caught the fish. We were fishing a T on Barren a few weeks later and I went to swing one in the boat not noticing he was standing down in the boat, he put his hand up to catch/block it and the hook on my crankbait went into the webbing between his fingers. I heard him kinda yell but it took a moment to realize what was going on. He had the fish held against him with one hand and the other hand was connected to the fish via a rattle trap, with the fish thrashing arround like crazy. I cut the line, unhooked the fish, threw it in the livewell then tended to my buddy. After a minute of us talking it over on how to remove the hook it just fell out!! He won't admit to it but I could tell he was scared just sitting there with that hook deep in his hand. I have got to say his netting skills have improved greatly since that day! lol!!!

A few years ago I was fishing top water when I had an awsome strike. I then set the hook hard. It was a nice one. And then just as fast as the hard strike had happened the lure was out of her mouth and flying right at my face. I tried to duck and lifted my arm up to protect my face. In doing so I managed to knock my glasses off into the water and bury the hook barb deep into my arm. My brother was able to dive in get my glasses and later he cut the hook out of my arm.

I had an unfortunate occurance happen to me a few years ago. My wife and I were going out and I decided I had time for a few cast with a crankbait at my little pond in my backyard while waiting for my wife. On my first cast with my little bait a large fish swallow my lure. I get it to shore to find a 8# plus catfish hooked.Since I was all dressed up and didn't wish to go out with fish smell on me I elected to unhook the catfish without touching him. As I grab the lure he jerked his head inbedding 2 of the trebble hooks in my finger.Needless to say they were down pass the barb. Lucky for me when the hook lodged in me it unhook the fish. The way it was hooked in my finger it was impossible to push through and cut off the barbs.Off to the hosp[ital we went. At the hospital the doctor numb the finger and proceeded to extract the hook. Then to my amazement the doctor ask one of the most stupid questions I have ever heard. He want to know if I wanted my lure back. I quickly reply YES it was one of my favorite lure..it caught a catfish and a sucker(me) at the same time. I learned an important lesson that day..stay in the house and wait before going out instead getting in one last cast.

There are a lot of fishing shows that I don't care for, but only one that I refuse to watch - "Fishing with Keith Warren". I can't stand him.

My dad lost his front teeth when his snagged carolina rig finally came loose. That egg sinker came flying out of the water and hit perfectly on his mouth. He spit 3 teeth out into his hand.

How about one treble hook in your shoestring one in your finger and also in a fish flopping about and your pliers at the other end of the boat. Makes it kind of hard to move to your pliers, the fish was kind enough to extract the hook from my finger ( ouch ). Problem solved.

OOOWWWWW! I would much rather have a hook in me (I've had several) than this happen. I took a heavy jig to the forehead last year that about knocked me down - but I can't imagine one to the mouth. I guess I will start wearing a mouthgaurd! lol

    Re: OUCH!!! That hurt..

when i was younger about 12 or 13 i was fishin off a dock at my old neighbor hood pond with a 1/4 jig that i had just got at walmart and i had seen the guys on tv ripping big fish out of the reeds and grass on the big o and such so i thought i would try it.... i went and got my dads spidercast rod and tied the jig on cause i had heard how good that braid was... there was a wad of cattails growin about 10 feet from the side of the dock i casted it over there and was workin out the backlash this was one of my first experiences with a baitcaster and no stretch line.... id say the cat tails was about 2 or 3 feet deep and i picked up the lure and set it down like i had been taught to worm fish... then i felt a tick and i set the hook and i only had about 10 feet of line out and the hook came ripping out of the cattails over my head and then slingshoted right into the back of my head burrying the hook... it really didnt hurt that bad until i went home and dad tried to get it out.. but nope a 12 year old scared to death with a 3/0 hook stuck in the back of their head isnt a good combo.. so dad goes to take me to the hospital....and here is the bad part i get in the vehicle and my dad isnt a small guy by no means i had my arm on the center console holding the jig and wam dad hits my arm and it jerks the jig oh lordy that was bad... but thru it all when they numbed my head with that crap they use it hurt worse for them to numb it that the whole jig in my head.... plus dad had to cut the hook cause the doc was a wimp and couldn't....

Last September I was fishing with my roommate one evening. It was still hot out so he didnt have a shirt on, and he wanted to run the trolling on my johnboat but he is the worst at it. He had me pointed straight out in the lake I tried to cast right by him but I ended up hitting him square in the back with a 200 series bandit somehow it didnt dig in his skin it just left 2 nice little cuts. On that very cast a caught a 19" largemouth. Needless to say when the fishing gets slow I try bouncing one off his back again.
