I was watching Fishing with Keith Warren a few minutes ago and he was fish Lake Huetas(sp) in Mexico with a guy named Mark Davis, avid angler Mark Davis not the Pro Mark Davis. Mark is slow rolling a 1oz spinnerbait and hooks into one that is 7 or better, gets it right to the boat and just as he is about to lean out an lip the fish it jumps and spits the spinnerbait and hits Mark in his Left eye. Luckily, he was wearing polarized glasses, which the impact broke out the left lense and you see it flying off into the water. That could have ended a fishing trip in a bad way. I have always hated lipping fish especially with crankbaits and pretty much net or swing in everything. I could not imagine what a crankbait or spinnerbait hook could do to the eye or face if it impacted like this one did. The worse I ever got was at Ky Lake a couple of springs ago. Early spring and I was flipping shallow cover in Woody's Cove with a lizard when I hooked "Big Momma". She came up then went down and wrapped me around the buck brush. Yeah, probably I never should have flipped that far back into the junk, but my motto is "Never on then Never in". I went in after her with the trolling motor acting more like a chain saw than a trolling motor. I see her and reach under water with my left hand trying to lip her but she would have no part of this. Some how she got off but left the hook in my left thumb. So now I am wrapped around the buck brush with my big behind half in and half out of my boat. Luckily my scissors were close enough that I cut the line and un wrapped myself. Hook was buried past the barb, first day of a 4 day trip so there is not chance of seeking medical attention, pushed the barb thru, cut it off and removed the hook. Took duct tape and paper towels to wrap and fish the rest of the day. Had a great day, took out at dark and went and found some sterile bandages for the thumb. Fished the next 3 days with 9 fingers and one sore thumb and it took forever for that to heal up. I did use the sore thumb to lip them all when removing the hooks and the duct tape exterior helped a lot. If she wasn't a really good shot of a fish of a lifetime, then maybe I don't go in after her, but she was a really good fish. I would probably do the same thing again if it happened, but when they get close to my boat it either the net job or the swing job. Not taking one to the face like this guy did. He was not hurt and his glasses saved him from some really serious trouble if that spinnerbait hits him directly on the eye.
