It's the Walmart syndrome. Sometimes we don't realize what we're giving up in the long run to save a few bucks today. I worked for 3 years in my early pre-teen years at a bait shop in Indiana. It was exactly how you describe it. I thought I had the greatest job in town.
I think the guys that are left open today are eeking out a living on bait. I haven't stepped into a Ma & Pa bait shop lately that carries close to the inventory that we carried in the place I use to work. I think it is just like you say in that they can't compete on most items.
It's a catch-22. Everyone wants to try and stretch how far their money will go but by doing so we enable big business to drive production jobs out of the US along with some of our culture.
