    Snaky Point, Oakland City?

Where is Snaky Point near Oakland City? I have never been here before but I have heard that it has some excellent crappie and bluegill fishing. I have fished the public lake in Oakland City but I have no idea where Snaky Point is at. I have just heard, and read about it but I dont know how to get there. Has anyone ever fished there before or know how to get there?

I have been there one time last year. I ended up stopping at a gas station/grocery store and getting directions to Snakey Point from there. It's North East of Oakland city. I didn't fish though. It's very shallow and connected to the Patoka River. When they Patoka River is above Flood stage it backs up into Snakey Point's waters. There is a gravel road that leads to the area. I would take a small john boat up there if I wanted to fish it.

You can get maps at the USF&W office there in Oakland City. It's right there on the state highway/road that goes though town. I think it's on the South Side of the Highway. US Fish & Wildlife Office.

According to the Fishery Surveys conducted by IDNR those waters have some fast growing crappie and bass.

Right now may be an ideal time to fish it. That water being so shallow is bound to be warming up faster than the river. And the fish like to come up out of the river to avoid the current and find food and shelter. There are plenty of woody plants in that water there. I call that stuff "Buckbrush".

Love that place. It is very shallow so you need a boat that doesn't take much water. It is full of lilly pads and you have to make your way through them. As Moose mentioned stop at the HQ in Oakland City and get a map and info about how to get to the ramp. It is a great place for a canoe. Lots of wildlife there including an active eagle nest.

There are several programs on line that can show you a birds eye view of snakey point and the roads surrounding the area.

Google Earth will do this too. And Microsoft has a similar satellite view on line. You can use a map view or a satellite view or a hybrid view that shows satellite pictures of the area combined with the road map overlayed on the pictures. You can zoom in to streel level, city level, county level or state level or world level views. And you can pan the map around to look at different areas on the globe.

I use this program all the time to check out my fishing spots from a satellite overhead veiw. It's amazing what we can do these days.

    Google earth works well.
The ramp is at 38°21'7.70"N lat and 87°19'15.13"W lon
    That should help.

There are signs that say not to block the road.

I would think that people just park along the side of the road. It's not really setup for a lot of people.

Yes, you just park right along the road. Usually not many vehicles there.
