    Fireline for Musky

If I use fireline for musky, besides the metal leader do I need a mono leader directly to the fireline? If yes how long and what knot?

    Thanks

    Re: Fireline for Musky

I have used braid for musky, with a small wire leader tied to the line. That fish if its in the mood will hit a yellow rope.I have by accident only caught a few on just plain mono, and not have a bite off. But then I have had had northern pike cut the line on spinner baits, and knew they were going to be in trouble later. I'd skip the mono leader, too many knots can cause trouble.

Lots of muskies are caught by bass fishermen unintentionally every year using light mono but I'm sure a good number also bite through also. If you’re targeting muskies most recommend 50-80# braid with a wire leader although some use a super thick fluorocarbon leader. It can be done with fireline and a mono leader but why chance it?

I recommend using cortland 50# and at least 50# flourocarbon leader I have had trouble using fireline its way tooooo slick and the word monofillament and musky do not mix. mono stretches causing hooks not to penetrate. I recommend using the improved clinch knot.

Hi, I use Power Pro 50# line with a fluorocarbon or 12-18" wire leader, I sometimes use lighter gear (bass) casting gear for esox. the average muskie caught is about 14-16 lbs. its much more fun on lighter gear. I have caught a 37" fish on ultralight gear when it hit a bluegill. I always tie a palomar knot. another thing I do is put a small round plastic bead on the line to prevent the leader from hitting the first guide and causing damage.good luck.

Power Pro and a wire leader is the way to go. I prefer 80# as you start using larger baits and catching fish at boat side you will see why.
