    Cave Run/Shantie Hollow

    Back from the Cave.
We had a nice trip but no fish. The rain had the water way up and the folks there said that it was coming up three inches per hour.
We put the boat in Sat. morning and could hardly find the ramp later that day. The lake was full of people 1 muskie and 2 bass tournaments. We did not even see a fish being caught. My son did miss a muskie strike at the boat. He tried to set the hook to fast. My brother caught a tennis shoe that I said cost us a few hundred dollars to catch. LOL.

    Shanty Hollow yesterday.
I stopped at the gas / bait store just before you get to the lake on 185 to pick up some minnows and found that they had closed up. I told the wife that she was going to have to learn how to use crappie jigs. We fished for about three hours and she caught a short bass and I caught nothing. I guess she was showing me. The water had a little color to it and I am sorry to say that I did not even think to check the water temp. There was a fellow fishing there that had some nice crappie caught on minnows in about 2' of water.

We had fun fishing even without catching anything.

The Muskie can be tuff sometimes, if not most times. I struggle on the Cave, But I know I'm not alone. Thats all part of it. With conditions tuff, the way they were, having one strike at the boat shouldn't be considered a bad day by any means.
Keep after 'em and good luck.

I was one of those musky tournament boats and it was tough. I did manage a 35 1/2 and took 14th fishing solo. Had a nice one up in the back of little cave that wouldnt commit and had a heavy fish come unpinned in the sewer plant. Did boat another 29 incher that would of really helped if i cound of stretched another inch out of her but thats fishin. 25 fish all together scored this weekend. They just posted the results on promusky.com

That was our first time at the cave. My brother and son were trying for the muskie and I pitched a plug for bass. My bad neck and arms wont let me fish much any more and there is no way I can pitch anything of any size for muskie. We had a good time with lots of good laughs. The country is very pretty there. I think we might go back in Oct.

We ran into two young ladies fishing the tournament. It was good to see these ladies out there. I did not get their names but I hope they did well. The young lady I talked to seemed like a sweet girl.

I guess 15th. is pretty good. I’m sure it was not what you hoped for but it sounds like you did well anyway.

Did you catch them while trolling?

We learned a few things while we were there and that is always a plus. The manner in which the people were trolling was a surprise for us. We had only trolled for hybrids at barren.

We fish the green river at mammoth cave and have caught a few muskie there while bass fishing. I saw a pic of a 52" muskie caught out of there and a fellow told me he caught one at 56"s last year at lock 5.

Tina and Di were the 2 ladies fishing. Di is the co-owner of Drifter Tackle and Tina is out of Hazard. Tina's husband runs Redstone Guide Service out of Hazard.
Short line trolling is very productive for muskie, it seems like a fish would run with a boat over head but with short line trolling the bait is only 3-8 ft behind the boat.
The fish I managed to get in the boat were caught trolling, the ones that did not make it in the boat were casting.

Green River Lake is my favorite place to fish. Right now with the spawn patterns going on fishing is tough. Wait until this flooded water clears and the spawn ends in a couple of weeks and go back. It is my favorite time for numbers. Fall of course is the time for the big ones fattening up for the winter. Muskie start holding eggs in the fall so thier weight can really increase.
