    Re: Ohio River Fishing

the ohio is a great place to land a big cat your close to my neck of the woods. my advice for bait is skipjack &live bluegill & fish outer bends of the river. the water is usually deeper active cats will be staged at the front of the hole. not trying to toot by on horn but man there is great fishing here. last year I put several cats on my boat that weighed over 20 pds
biggest weighed 65 pds the biggest yet for me is 80 pds flat head. and far as bass fishing I landed a 6 pounder in littleblueriver last yr. to me the river got me heart and soul . goodluck to those that give her a try to me she the best.

Thanks for the info on the bait choices. Sounds like you had a pretty good year! Hope I can get into some of those big ones. Really be happy if I can manage to put my boys on some. That would be even better than me catchin' some!!

    Re: Ohio River Fishing

The two Blue River islands are not islands anymore. When they built the Cannelton Lock and Dam the islands eroded away. I almost got my boat stuck on the upper island last summer when the water was low. I usually fish Blue River or around the mouth of it. I've caught some small stripers and sauger there on rat-l-traps. Haven't had much luck with bass there. I've seen some guy's take some big catfish from the holes in the main river. Never tried it myself. Be careful if you try and launch at the ramp where the iron bridge is off of SR-62 on Blue River. I've launched there before but it can be tricky. I'd use the one in Leavenworth. A lot better. O'bannon is a great place to camp. Just don't camp in the back where the horse campground is. Gets kinda smelly if the wind is blowing the right way.

Thanks alot for the info! That would explain why I couldn't see the islands on Google Earth. They are in my map book (Printed in 2006) you'd think they wouldn't have put them on the map since they aren't there anymore. Oh well, that's why I asked for the info. Again, thanks alot!

I used a pearl and black worm to imitate the shad in the river to catch the bass. Also a Black and Chart. Pig-n-jig works great. Throw crank baits and slow roll a single bladed Colorado Spinner bait about 1/4 oz in white and chart. The two main creeks up river from Leavenworth and down to the Little Blue River are great area's to fish. A Rat-L-Trap in either a chrome and blue or Chrome and black in about a 1/4oz should produce about anything swimming in that neck of the woods. Good Luck and let us know how you do....

There is a public concrete boat ramp in Alton on the Ohio just downstream from the Little Blue. There is a private gravel ramp under the bridge.

I always put in at the Leavenworth Boat Ramp and then go down river to the Little Blue. Once your in the Little Blue, the cut that goes to the right side is where I caught the biggest Large Mouth Bass in the River...She weighed over 5 lbs easy and caught her on my go to bait a Black & Chart. Pig-n-Jig with a # 11 Uncle josh Pork Trailer attached.
