Would like to take the trip from Beattyville to the Ohio River Does anyone know if all the locks are going to be working this summer ?
Don't think that trip is possible anymore. I know that Lock 7 at High Bridge was welded shut many years ago and now concrete is in place making the lock a thing of the past. Also, at Lock 9, an almost $15 million project is taking place to basically replace the dam with 52 foot diameter cylinders filled with concrete which will create a new dam. I am not for sure but I think that alot of the other locks were rendered totally inoperable. Years ago we used to fish around Lock 7 for white bass, but now the area is basically posted and I have heard of people being told to leave by officers because they were considered to be trespassing. Most of the locks are under control of the Ky River Authority and not under the control of the Army Corps of Engineers. The KRA is concerned with water quality and with the watershed and not concerned with navigation.
I believe MSD is right. I know the lower locks, at least 1-3, have been sealed off. But I think all of them are closed indefinitely. When I was checking this out, I found this really cool site with pictures of all of them:

It seems there may be plans to renovate locks 1-5:

Lock 4 is the only one scheduled to be open this summer. Look up the Kentucky River authority for all the details.
