Smile Grand Pa...Will You Take Me Fishing?

Man, hearing that from your grandchild will certainly pull on your Heart Strings, make you Puff Up and Stick out your Chest! Yep, I'm, Grand Pa and I think we have a great 6 year old, fisherman in the making.

Now, to all you Grand Pa's out there, I could use a little help. I live in Western Ky, grandson lives in the Lexington, Ky (Midway area), so I don't know the area, much less where to take him fishing! Regardless of where we go, I want to do my best to ensure he catches fish first time out....size...type...not important, just catch fish on the first time out.

The one area which I have seen on the way up is on the Elkhorn (creek-River) on the bridge at Fishermills, just off I 64. Alway seems to be a truck or two parked there, ...assume the are a fishing the creek.....

Please give me your suggestions on where I might take him...as well as how we should fish....live bait.....or .......?

Also, how did you introduce your children/grandchildren to fishing? We all got a start somewhere/sometime....for me it was just by chance, a farm boy with a little extra time with a hook and line and a local creek.

Thanks to all the Grand Pa's on the board.

    Good Fishing to All,
    Gary

We would be fishing from the bank....I know that limits us..
    Thanks for the advise.

    Gary,
I'm not an expert on that area, but here are 3 thoughts that came to mind:

    1. You could take him to the game farm ponds at the KDFWR in Frankfort.

    2. Wilgreen lake in Richmond wouldn't be too far, and you can catch pretty decent bluegill, crappie, catfish and bass (at least you could a couple of years ago the last time I was there)

    3. Beaver Lake near Lawrenceburg is in range, but probably a little farther than the others. Good bluegill, crappie, cat and bass fishing.

Wilgreen and Beaver are either trolling motor only or idle speed only. The game farm ponds would be fished from shore.

    Boone,

Email me at [email protected] in May and I'd be glad to take you and your grandson to a couple spots on Elkhorn.

Thanks, I'll be in touch. Next thing on my list is to take NEW fisherman to Bass Pro the next time I'm im in the area. Buy him a basic rod/reel (spincast) rod, small tackel box, basic hooks, sinkers, floats and 2-5 casting baits.

We'll start there with the basics for bait fishing/jigs and then go from there.

It" so nice to have a "Land Owner" offer to assist a new fisherman to our sport. I can"t thank you enough,

    Good Fishing,
    (Grand Pa) Gary

Oh I would give anything if my Grandpa was still around. He started me out catfishing at a farm pond. The conversations and memories I cherish so much. No matter how bad he felt when I said Papaw let's go fishin he would head for the shed and grab his gear. I take my Dad, and two daughters fishing and will start this year with my nephew. Can't wait for them Grandkids!

I'll second the KDFWR in Frankfort. They have two ponds there, stocked with bass, bluegill, and catfish regularly, and with rainbow trout in the spring and fall. They're just about guaranteed to catch something there, especially after they stock the trout, which is in March or early April.
