    boat trailer light help

ok, before I tear the taillight up. How do you put a new bulb in the oblong light that has a rubber seal around it. The light does not come out the back, it has to come out from the light side of the trailer. can anybody help please?

It depends on the type light you have, if it has a rubber grommet around it you can stick a screwdriver or something like that between the two and pry it out. Some of the over lights are not serviceable and means you would have to replace the complete light.

it has the rubber grommet around it. I kinda figured it came out that way but I have a tendancy to break things. I'm going downstairs and try it right now. I'll let you know Crappie1 if I was successful or not. thanks for your help.

you were correct Crappie1. I think the light is a sealed unit. it had a 3 prong plug on it. I don't think you can just replace the bulb. where is the best place to buy the light?

I think any auto parts store should stock that light.

WalMart has those for about $10 for the whole unit( if its the same unit). Just replaced mine a couple of years ago. They just unplug at the back, pull them out and plug your new unit to your wiring harness. Then press the whole unit back in the slot and push hard until the unit snaps back in place.

    Re: boat trailer light help

Before you replace the light it self....Check your fuse panel...If your vehicle has the Tow package then the Fuse panel will have an individual fuse assigned to each tail light on the trailer. I thought I was having the same problem until I checked my owners manual for my (04) F150...... The fuse panel has assorted fuses specifically assigned for the Trailer Lights.... Fuse's for the right side of the trailer and left side...and I believe for the Brake lights and running lights......... Check the Fuse Panel first to make sure it's not just a blown fuse....or A bad connection for the plug from the trailer to the tow vehicle.... Corrosion inside the plug will prevent a good connection and keep the light from working.....

    Re: boat trailer light help

I was looking at my tail lights tonight. My brake and turn signal doesn't work on the drivers side. The running light works. The main bulb has to filaments . One works and one doesn't. Tried to open the plastic to change the bulb. Couldn't do it. I figured that it was A sealed light to keep the water out. Looks like I'll have to but a new light assembly.

Napa has the sealed lights in stock. Might want to shell out a few extra bucks for the LED version, will last a lot longer and a little brighter as well.

    good luck,

On my trailer you have to replace the whole assembly. It's not very hard, though. Costs about $15 and takes 5 minutes to change.

Great advise. You can get a cheap volt tester to check, or move the other light over and test.
I would also replace both of them at the same time if one is out. Putting two different ones on there can shift the tail light/brake load and cause one side or the other to burn out faster. Keep the good one you replace as an emergency spare.
