I was just riggin up some rods for flipping bushes and trees and just wondering whats the best line for the situation?Ive had bad luck with getting the hookset with flourocarbon for some reason so ive decided to try out 17lb trilene XT and rig one up with maybe braid. But the lake ill be fishing i think will have too clear of water to flip braid with, any suggestions?

I am slowly going towards flouro----there's something about the feeling you get with flouro and a sensitive rod and a bass biting a plastic bait. It's like you have a stiff wire stretched out and somebody "twangs" it!!!! LOL!!!! You definitely know what's happening when a bass bites.
fluoro with "san diego" knot
why the san diego knot?
I use Flourocarbon on EVERYTHING except topwater, even night fishing for I would rather have the feel of the Flourocarbon versus seeing the Flourescent Mono. Nothing like Flourocarbon and Tungsten in my book. That being said, I used heavy Flourocarbon last year flipping and also 30lb Braid. I busted both of them on the hookset, maybe it has something to do with the size of my big behind and the amount of hookset that I use, but I did switch to 50lb Braid late spring last year and have not snapped it since. I have 50lb Braid on my flipping stick now and Flourocarbon on everything else except my one rod with Mono for topwater. I am the first to admit that I am no where near a novice much less an expert in flipping but I do like the immediate response that I get from Braid due to no stretch. I would think that Mono would stretch too much to get the fishes head turned quick enough to get them out of the thick junk but again, just my opinion.
Elwood is right about the sensitivity of using Flouro and a Tungsten weight.I use 20lb Seagar Invisx and as long as i wet my line before cinching the knot tight, and keep a check on the line it does really well. I have done alot of flipping and pitching over the last few weeks and the only time ive had one break off it was my fault. I pulled the rod outta the rod locker, it was still rigged from my last trip to the lake and i didnt check the line. I even broke a flipping stick 3 weeks ago on a hookset.
But if you dont have the confidence in flouro then go with the braid over the mono. No stretch at all....
I like heavy mono for flipping. This is one time you reall need to see your line. Also it is much cheaper. I used flouro for a while flipping, but it gets expensive. Almost every fish you catch will get tangled in something, causing you to re-tie after every other fish. So I am trying mono this year, and so far it hasn't cost me any fish.
On the other hand, for all other plastics I am right there with Elwood and KyNitro - You cannont beat the Flouro/tungsten combo, I can feel the fish approaching it!! LOL.

My brother in law would always say out loud "I got one breathing on it" when he would get a bite. I now think it was the Flouro/tungsten the whole time and he could feel it approaching before the bite. And all this time I thought he was just that good
My choice? 30 lb braid, a 20lb seagar leader, as long as the rod, wet the flouro before drawing it tight. You should be able to move stups with it. Braid is so strong that two yrs ago I used 90lb on one of my down riggers, it makes no noise, since then I have gone back to wire, but i still use the 90 on my lure retrievers, and I did bring up a big limb, but in the process broke the lip off the bait.
