I am curious about the transducer on the new units. It is my understanding that the transducer has to be mounted below the lowest part of the boat to get the side views. Is that correct?

If so, doesn't that put it in a somewhat exposed position? I could see me accidentally letting the boat drift onto a mud bank. What about if a submerged log slid down the hull of the boat? Wouldn't it damage the transducer or even remove it?

My old Hummingbird unit calls for the transducer to be mounted on the transom, 3/16" below the bottom of the boat. My old unit also required this, per the installation manual. Unless your transducer is being 'thru hull mounted' aren't they all required to be just below the bottom of the boat? Both my units have a transducer design that allows it to break away if it hits an obstacle. If that happens, then you just pivot it back into place and it snaps into position. Just inquiring as to the different designs.

I will have to look at mine tonight. I still use my old WIDE Vision but I did not recall the transducer being below the hull. Been on there so long, I can't recall.

Let's assume it is 3/16 below the hull (cause it probably is). Is that the same spec for the new "fancy" models? I thought it needed to be lower than that. I guess I am envisioning it sticking down an inch or two below the hull.

All the ones I have seen are mounted on the transom, even with the bottom of the hull.

Not sure about the newer models. I would be interested in knowing what the installation manual calls out though. On my older model, the break-away design works real good. I have had to snap it back into place at least once per year due to debris impacts.

what i did was mount it to my trolling moter instead of the back. i did that because in my opion i like to read what i am going past not what i have already past. but the transducer is huge and was a little difficult to mount but it worked. it took me two days and a buddy on the third to make sure everything was wright. but keep this in mind i am new to doing things myself on my boat. but i figured that the only way to learn is get in there and do it.

I have a question. Does the motor block any of the "view" I can't see how you could mount the transdusor below the lowest point of the motor on any boat.

As you turn the trolling motor, does it mess up the side scan? Seems like it would. Now if you're just lookig straight down, don't guess it would matter.

I don't think I would mount it on the Trolling Motor. You need a straight line of travel, that is almost impossible to get with the TM, to get a true image of the bottom. Check out the link Stoner sent they cover all of this on there.
