new boat, I need a clue

I bought a new 16 foot jon and it came with an 83 evinrude. It runs good, but when I rev it up it tries to plane then slows down and while the engine is reving. I think this is cavitation. A friend told me it sounded like my prop was not low enough.

It is a tall transom- 20-21 inches and a long shaft motor. However, the cavitation plate is about 3 inches above the botom of the boat.

Is this cavitation? Can you buy a plate or something for this. The boat motor will not go down any further on the transom. OR am I going to have to buy another (newer) motor wife will not like that.

The cavitation plate should not be that far up. Sounds like you need a long shaft engine.

is the motor setting level or up a little?does it have power trim?sounds like it may need tucked under,if you don't have power trim there is a pin in the transom braket you can pull out to let the motor down, that is all you may need to do,is the prop eat up bad or bent?you should not need a xtra long shaft motor,i assume it is a flat bottom if so as long as the prop is under water they will usuall just flatly scoot off,if it don't work you may need to invest in a set back plate.

You can buy a wider Cavition PLate that is attached to your motor and it will plane off nicely . I have one on my boat . that is if you can ajust the angle of your motor , this can be done by adusting the the angle of the lower unit so she planes off. THere should be a pin below the engine compartment to adjust the angle of the motor. Yank
