Re: Wanting to start fishing again...

    Sir,

If you want to experience the "great outdoors" I have one idea for you that my wife and I just tried not long ago with our 4 young ones, ages 10 down to 2 (we are in Louisville also). Green River has a GREAT campground were you can go and "pitch" a tent for a night or two, we did it for spring break to keep it cheap, and there are 3 fully equiped playgrounds and all the "shore fishing" you could ever want. I was able, thanks to some help from here, to take the boys to one little hole about 75 meters from the site and catch blue gill ALL DAY LONG. It kept them interested and now they are eager to go anytime we don't have something planned. Just my two cents, but it worked like I had hoped for my 3 boys AND my daughter (who I have to admit I NEVER thought would wanna fish, its hard enough to get her to where anything but a dress . Good luck and if you are going to go there book SOON as they fill up VERY fast there.

    Rob

    Thank you, JoeB.

After reading some of the recent controversy on the board, I was afraid how it would appear... asking, and accepting, some help.

JoeB is right, I came here looking for advice. In my original post, I stated that I have already purchased a Barbie rod/reel for my daughter. I was simply inquiring about where/how a beginner (me and my daughter, both) should start.

If a beginner can't come here and solicit information, where can I go?

I will gladly return any hardware I receive (I wasn't expecting any) so that it can be given to those truly in need of it. I was simply looking for information.

I wouldn't worry about it. Eddie just offered to supply gear when it wasn't requested. He's just fulfilling the spirit of his organizations name (fishing4kids).

I've fished all those, and right now I'd say Tom Wallace would be your best bet. I love Fisherman's, for about a month or so in the spring, but now it's getting too overgrown, like it does every year. A little tyke learning to cast would spend all day in the weeds. Miles is one of my favorite places to fish, also, but it can be tough to get down by the water; you might not want to clamber down there with a kid, I don't know. Tom Wallace has great access, and the fishing lately has been good. And they stocked it yesterday, not sure with what. Corn is simple for kids to use, and the trout there eat it up. Or you can use worms near shore, and be pretty much guaranteed a few bluegill. I don't know a lot about teaching kids to fish, but I know you want them to have some success, and they will there.

If you're ever out near Frankfort or want to make the trip, they have two fishing ponds at KDFWR headquarters there, one of which is just for kids 12 and under. Never been there, but I hear it's nice. Best of luck to you and your kids, and don't forget the camera, not that you'll ever forget her first fish!
