    Drop Shot questions

I have never tried Drop Shotting but I am wanting to try it. Any suggestions on the size weight to use? I seen some of the drop shot weights on Bass pro shops website and willing to try some if they catch fish, Just not sure what size weights most people prefer with this rig.

    Thanks,
    Kevin

I don't use a drop shot weight. Use a Shakey Head. Two hooks are better than one! Tie a palomar knot for the dropshot then with the tag end tie on a shakey head. I have very good results doing this. Most of the time the bite comes on the dropshot worm.

That is one of the smartest tips I have seen in a long time! KUDOS!

    Re: Drop Shot questions

I have had better luck on a dropshot using heavier casting gear. 12 # line with a 3/4 weight and a standard gama 3/0 hook. I have used this around cover when the fish are holding.

I have also used the finesse/light line approach with some success. You should use heavy enough weight to keep it on the bottom.

    Re: Drop Shot questions

depends on how and where you are planning to fish the drop shot. shallow ? deep ? rocky, weedy, timber ? as with most techniques, there are alot of variables that affect your setup.
i fooled with this for the last 4 yrs and this is what i have found.

rod - at least 6'6" and generally no more action than medium.
line - flourocarbon 6-8# test MAX
    spinning reel
weight from 1/8 oz to 1/4 oz depending on depth and wind

"leader" length (from weight to the hook) depends on bottom cover and depth the fish are holding.

hook size -> smallest you can get away with - i like the mosquito hooks from owner.

baits -> whatever you like, i am partial to small (3-4in roboworms) and small 3in shad imitators.

i have gone to using this as my goto panfish rig for targeting deep bluegills at cumberland and dale hollow. i have not had much success with it for keeper bass but it does catch lots of small spots in the summer/fall.

hope this helps and good luck !

    Re: Drop Shot questions

Well i will be fishing Laurel middle of the month and if the bite is tough I thought maybe it might be something to try. But the thought of using it on a Shakey Head is a heck of an Ideal.

    Re: Drop Shot questions

IMHO don't waste your $$ on the dropshot weights. I use cheap split shots and pinch them on with my fingers so they pull out easily. On windy days I'll use a nut from a bolt (1/4 20). But the shakey head works until you get around thick cover. It to gets costly if you break them off. I've even used a jig at the bottom. But most fish will come on the Drop bait. It's a good way to find out where they want the bait, up or down. Good luck
