Braided Line vs Flourocarbon

I fished beaver Lake on 5/01 and I was using 14 lb Berkley Vanish on my spinnerbait. I had some trouble with break offs. Once when making a CAST --believe it or not--the spinnerbait just went flying off into the grass. And once, after a backlash, I was pulling out line and I found the line broken inside the spool. I was fishing around the thick grass and I'm sure the friction from the line and the grass caused the problem. I probably should have retied more often but I had no problems with the 10 lb Stren i was using for my rat-L-trap around the same grass. Just wondering what you guys thought of Berkley Vanish? I'm thinking of switching to braided line for fishing spinnerbaits, flukes, jigs, etc around grass but I have always had trouble with casting braided line in the past. I got more backlashes than with mono and getting out a backlash with braided line I found alot harder. Any suggestions on a castable braided line?

Vanish is the worst line ever made imo...it has done the same thing to me in the past

Vanish has built quite a reputation for extremely low knot strength and break offs. It is not a very good line. Braid has it's advantages at times, although I am not a big fan of it. Chunk rock will eat through it pretty quick. I would give a better flourocarbon a try. The trilene 100% is good, but I like the seaguar the best. I was about to give up on flouro, too, because of the vanish, it really is bad. You will be able to tell a difference in feel and sensitivity with flouro. I would start out using it for your bottom bouncing rigs - worms, jigs, rigs.

The Trilene is what I had "donated" to me and put on my baitcasters for this tourney. I could feel EVERYTHING, I don't know much about the different lines, cause I just use what I can get right now, but I am a beginner and everything I have been told to "feel for" or "notice" when they happen, I have been able to. Just a beginners observation.
Does anyone use the stuff called "XXX", I had that on the one I did best with and it seemed like the pole would break before that would. My goodness is that like STRONG. I was wondering what the drawbacks or issues where with it since I had no backlashes (after two weeks in the yard practicing all the tricks you all gave me, and learning the fine art of undoing PLENTY of backlashes during practice . Just thought I might ask, cause it seemed to work well, but I only had enough for one pole. Thanks.

Now I don't know if they changed the formula from Vanish to the Vanish Transition, but I have not had any problems with the Transition Gold in 14 lb. And if you do try the Transition I recommend the Gold vs. the Red because it is much more visible...JMO

Vanish trashed a trip to Dale about 3 years ago. Same problems you are describing. Imagine seeing the only spinnerbait that had caught a fish flying through the air no longer attached to my reel

I have used a bunch of lines since then. Before I ever spool a new line on my reel, I tie a 4ft section of line to a hook with the point cut off and see how much weight it will lift. Lines that peform poorly don't get any better on the water. That 14# vanish in question will not pick up a 10# weight, neither will Triplefish. Pure FC's that perform well are Gamma, Pline, Sunline and I'm just starting to fish with BPS now which does well in the strength test.

The braid is great line or some things but comes with a number of little negatives like wrapping around the tip of a rod or causing a backlash mid-cast on a baitcaster.

I use pure FC, Braid and hybrid lines like Yozuri for different things. For spinnerbaits and cranks, I go Yozuri Hybrid or Pline Floroclear. I don't want the no stretch (braid) affect when I hit a log with blades nor do I need to worry about my line being seen on a moving bait.

Yeah, I've read a lot of negative posts about Vanish. I tried it anyway and had problems. I also tried BPS Flourocarbon, which gets mostly good reviews, and although it was much better I still don't think either is as good as PLine, IMO. So after playing around with some different ones, I'm going back to Pline, which I always have liked anyway.

can't go wrong with seaguar, the only flouro I have used this year. and knock on wood no break offs of any kind other than hang ups of course. and as far as mono go for top water try gamma 12lb it's as strong as 20lb of anything else. after this spool I'm going to 8 or 10 lb gamma, some say gamma flouro is very good also haven't tried it yet

Have you been spying on my line collection. This is what I use. I tried the gamma flouro, but it for the money Seaguar is as good. I had my first break-off today with seaguar this year. A four pounder or so just out of the nets reach. I just got it un-hung, and probably should have re-tied, so I will take the blame for that one.

Seaguar is my favorite flouro line also. Ive learned though to keep a check on it. Ive always retyed often even when i used mono and still retye with the flouro.
I tried Vanish and just like everyone has said i had break off after break off, No matter how many times i checked mt line....

I've had nothing but bad luck with the Vanish as well. Have tried Seaguar and Gamma and like the both but are way to expensive. I've been using nothing but Vicious Flourocarbon for the last 3 years and have had no problems at all.

Not a fan of the vanish at all. I have been using the Trilene flouro and love it!
