    Question McAlpine question

River levels are forecast to be around 17 ft. or less next week. Now, I would never take my 14' jonboat out on the open Ohio, but I'm thinking I could handle putting it in at Harrison Ave., motoring across to the beach, and fishing from there. What water levels do you look for before you do this? Any of you guys who have done this before have any tips for someone doing it for the first time? Mainly from a safety perspective. I've read through previous posts about the place, so I have a pretty good idea what baits to use and all. Thanks!

    Thumbs up Re: McAlpine question

plenty of people take boats like yours on the river. As long as you know your boat real well and understand how it will react to the current, swells, wind, and waves you'll be fine. The current up near the lower dam can be squirly, don't let it pull you into the white water!! You need your motor to be rock solid dependable so if you get into trouble it will start right up. Take your safety equipment/ wear your life jacket and go catch some fish.

One other thing: where you are planning on crossing the river can be one of the most difficult parts. The current from the upper and lower dams come together right there and it can be exciting in the current break. Sometimes it helps to let the river take you down stream a little bit as you cross, then back track up in the calmer water. No need in fighting it. Be carefull.

    Re: McAlpine question

I fish the river every week in a 14fter with a 15 hp johnson and have no problems. I don't go any further than the lower dam when it's 22ft at the lower gauge. I put in down at the ampitheater, Ive, had some bad experences at the Lois Clark ramp when they pop that lower dam open for no reason other than messin with me. If you see a long blonde headed guy in a puddle jumper say hi. Oh I did leave out one thing I have a deep V which is much better than a flat bottom 14fter.IMO... Chuck
