Talking archery in the schools program

I know this is kinda off topic but tonight I attended the national archery in the schools program shoot in Louisville. My daughter shot in the team competition for Eastside Middle in Mt Washington, If you have a chance to get this program in your kid's school, do it! Even elementary schools were there, schools from all over, California, Texas, Arizona just to name a few. I would like to give kudo's to the KDFW, they have supported this from the start, and have a strong showing at the competition too. They give scholarships to winners in some events, I was told by a game warden that a girl from Meade County High has won 3 scholarships to help pay college tuition. What a great thing to do for kids. Now, if we just get a fishing competion like this, maybe hold it at Amistead hmmmm...........

You said it. Roy Grimes, formerly a Deputy Commissioner of KDFW, is the NASP president and former KDFW Commissioner Tom Bennett does marketing, lobbying and fundraising for NASP.

It is an awesome program. School administrators love it because they have found that the skills necessary for success in archery (focus, concentration, etc.) have a carryover effect into learning. It helps in other ways too--school attendance on archery practice days always is very high.

My son's school has taken it on full force, and they love it.

I don't undrerstand why Eastside is the only school in the county to have the archery program. I know my son would love for them to have a team at Bernheim Middle. I am going to talk to some people there and see if they can't implement this program at his school.

What about the high schools in Bullitt County. Is Bullitt East planning on adding it, since that is where the kids from Eastside will be going.

I believe it is part of the physical education classes at the schools that have it.

Yes, Bullitt East is starting their program next year. If bernhiem gets one and I hope they do, Get ready to shell some coin out though cause the school pays for nothing, no transportation to events, not bows, arrows, uniforms... nothing that I am aware of. The administration at Eastside is not very supportive of the archery program. They complained that the archery team is using the gym too much.. that they need to rent it out to make money for the school. The coach quit last wek after being told to stop practicing so much. NASP is filming their national ad/commercial at Eastside Monday I bet that the staff will break their neck trying to get in. This is Eastside's second year, they had a 7th grade boy finish 3rd in state this year, my daughter finished somwhere in the top 70 in middle school girls, she has only been shooting for about 6 months. I hope that schools support your program better than ours. I emailed them last night and really laid the hammer to them, by the way, no staff or admin. people showed up for the nationals to support these kids. Shame on them.

Heard today that the Frankfort Christian Academy in came in somewhere in the top ten in the country. Does that sound right to those in the know?

That is a shame that it doesn't get more support from the staff.

As far as shelling out cash, I am used to it, my son plays AAU basketball and they play in a tourney somewhere nearly every weekend. Talk about expensive! Wish his team was sponsored by on of the shoe companies LOL!

I really hope his school gets it next year. He likes to shoot 3-D shoots when he can, so I think he would really like the school archery program.

Re: archery in the schools program

We don't know where we finished. We have never heard any results. I have seen Meade Co., Trigg co., and some others shoot, man are they good! I have heard different numbers from people, last I heard was between 3000-6000 kids were there to shoot. It was funny because the western teams used Eastsides and Breckenridge co's lanes for the high school shoot and you could tell the Oklahoma and Texas people from everyone else, they all wore cowboy boots! The California kids wore flip flops and shorts past their knee's with frizzy hair, what a hoot those guys were. I have a feeling that the next few years this will be big at all levels here in KY. I watched a 6 yr old from Meade Co. hit 4 out of 5 bullseyes during an intermission, what a show he put on- this was at 30 ft too!

Oh yeah, Thanks to Chickasaw archery club for letting us practice there when we had no where else to go, and the others that helped out in other area's. I would love to mention names but would forget someone so I'll just leave it as a big thank you to all who helped and donated.
