    Tubes

I was using a tube this weekend and doing rather well with it in a private lake in Owen county, but the problem was my hook sets on the larger fish. They were not hitting the lure the fish were just picking it up. I would let them run a little with it or hookset rather quick, I would have them on quite a short time and then lure gets thrown. I was using eagle claw lazer sharp 3/0 size hook with a 4 inch tube with 1/16 ounce bullet sinker, never had this problem before anybody else had issues like this before, I was texas rigging. Any tips on a better way of fishing a tube. I did not let them run with the lure a super long time, I did not want to put one in the gut.

    Re: Tubes

I always waller out a little area around the hook so it can penetrate the tube a little better. I think Gamakatsu makes a tube hook that might help with this problem I have never used them. Not knocking your hook selection but I would switch hooks. I have not had much luck with Eagle Claw, just my .02, good luck Ryan.

On tubes I always run the hook through and skin hook it. I've never lost a fish on a tube once the hook is set.

I don't think the problem is you. Sounds more like the Bass were just picking up the lure to take it off the nest? Fishing tubes is easy and when you have had success before and haven't changed anything then I would say the fish won that day.

    Re: Tubes

I use Gamakatsu hooks and fished the tube a lot at Ky and Barkley and never had a problem with the hookset. As Cobra said, I do run the hooke thru the tube and skinhook on the topside. No problem in getting the hook to the fish. DJD is right in that it is amazing at how they can pick it up and spit it out of a bed faster than you can set the hook. I watched a Hook n Look show where the camera man was under water giving play by play to the guy in the boat as to where to cast how close to the bed and when the lure was in the bed right down to the fish is looking it at it, he got it, swing and a miss. This happened MANY times to the same bed and the same fish. THe fish sucked it in and spit it out of the bed faster than the guy in the boat could get a hook in him. I was amazed and wonder how do we catch any fish for this guy could not get it done with a guy giving play by play under the water.

    Re: Tubes

The same thing happened to me last week fishing the KY. Approximately fifty percent of the bass hooked came unbuttoned even with a wide gap very sharp hook. The next day I had only one to come off. I was beginning to think I need a stiffer rod for more hook set. I have noticed in the KY, that bass once hooked walk on the water more and are a little more meaner than most other lakes. I had a 5+ last week that simply was all over the river before giving up. Oh, I had a 3+ bass that had colloration that I have never seen before. This bass was black...I mean real black with the extremely bright red gills. I have caught a lot of bass in my time but I have never seen a truely black bass before. One beautiful fish.

like TNT i would just go to a larger wide gap hook. i would also skin hook it. You could also try a different brand of tube with a thinner plastic.

    Re: Tubes

I would try a 4/0 EWG hook...also melt a small piece of shrink wrap on the shank of the hook where it bends..this will help keep the tube from sliding down onto the hook during the hook set.

    Re: Tubes

I had same problem on Ky lake friday had two big fish come to the top and spit a finesse jig out. I was using seven ft spinning reel and just could not move the jig in the fish's mouth. I switched to a bait casting heavy action.
