I have to agree with the spinning reel. I have an 8 and a 10 year old. I taught my 10 year old to use a spinning real about 2 years ago. (My youngest wasn't interested at the time). My 10 year old taught my 8 year old to use the spinning real in about 5 minutes the other day. I took them both to Cedar Creek last Saturday and they both fished, caught fish and didn't hook anything but fish... Well a life jacket once but that doesn't count because I do that from time to time... Anyway... I happen to have a "Cheapy" spinning rod and reel that I will gladly donate to your 10 year old.
I think spincasting reels are great and good for those a little younger and less coordinated but at 10... Lets get him one to put him ahead of the curve.
If your interested, let me know. I live in Lexington but get around the central KY area quite a bit with my job. If all else fails there is always snail mail.
And as far as lures go.. I would use a #0 or #1 Popeye jig with a Berkley Power Wiggler about 18" below a bobber.. Now is the time to wear the bluegill out!!!
Thanks for the offer. I purchased a nice Shakespear rod and reel for him and he loves it. He gets about 3 times the distance than the Zebco. Hope to get him in the boat next week for his first boating adventure. He is anchious to try out his new life jacket. Will keep you all posted..
