    Fly Fishing Cumberland River

First Things Firts...it's Good To Be Back On Fishin.com. I've Been Really Busy Lately And Haven't Been Able To Post In A While.

I'm Planning A Trip Up To The C-river This Wednesday To Do Some Fly Fishing. I Normaly Hit The Section Right Below Wolf Creek **** With Good Results, But I'm Curious As To Where The Bite Is Best Right Now. If Anyone Has Been Lately Or Knows A Good Section Of The River That Is Accessible And Wadeable, It Would Be Greatly Appreciated. If Not, I'll Just Go To Where I Know Produces.

Again, It's Good To Be Back And I Hope That Everyone's Lines Have Been Tight! Hagd!

I don't fish past winfrey's rock so the only places I could tell you to go are helm's landing and down around the dam. The generation schedule is really low right now so you should find some good wadeable areas. I know there is a place down river...around crocus creek? You might want to call strange bait and ask them where there might be a good spot.

    fishing is good...

    good luck

    Re: Fly Fishing Cumberland River

What do fly's hit, looks like they are a little small to catch. lol lol lol. Seriously I have seen several fly fish down towards Burksville. There is a sandbar there at the mouth of a small creek, cannot remember the name of creek but anyone there might know how to get there, it is a popular spot for bank fishing and I have waded out to the sandbar when the river is low, caught lots of good trout there. Hope this helps. Welcome back.

I haven't been this year yet, but plan on a float trip real soon.. Last summer I did some wading around Helm's Landing and really had some good luck there verses around the dam.. I don't fly fish or even own a fly rod, but catch plenty on a spinner with yo-zuri pins minnow..

    THANKS FOR THE REPLY.
I TRIED FISHING HELM'S LANDING LAST FALL WITHOUT MUCH SUCCESS. PERHAPS I DIDN'T KNOW THE SECRET FOR FISHING THAT SECTION. I HAD HEARD OTHER FLY FISHERMAN SAY THAT THEY HAD DONE WELL THERE, SO I THOUGHT I'D GIVE IT A SHOT. I HAVE HEARD THERE IS A LARGE SANDBAR DOWN AROUND BURKESVILLE THAT FISHES WELL. HAVE YOU EVER TRIED IT? JUST CURIOUS.
THANKS AGAIN FOR THE INFO. IT'S GOOD TO HEAR THE RIVER IS WADEABLE. SHOULD BE A GOOD TRIP! I'LL REPORT BACK!

Just my 2 bits: If you want to write about fly fishing the Cumberland, then consider getting some first hand knowledge and experience on the river. Your article would be much the better for it. There are several guides for hire if you need a jump start. It takes several years to learn that river, so careful is the byword. Not many take in/out points between Wolf Creek and TN if you get in trouble. Carry a dry pack, compass and topo map and GPS. Note: Cell phone coverage is ???? As an example, currently, Wolf Creek Dam is discharging at the rate of 23,000 cubic feet per second. Trust me, you don't want to hang a boat on a log jam with that kind of current. It will spin it lake a top and take it down in seconds.

Thanks For Everyone's Replies! It's Good To Be Back!
I Think I'll Head Up To Burkesville And Tried To Find That Sandbar, Then If That Doesn't Produce, Continue Up To The Wolf Creek ****. I Know I Can Catch 'em There! Again, Thanks For The Tips And I'll Make Sure To Report Back! Hagd!

    Re: Fly Fishing Cumberland River

Well, I'm Back From The C-river. The Day Went A Little Like This...

First Off, My Babysitter (granny) Fell Through, So I Had My Little Girl (5) With Me Which I Can't Complain About! Love Her To Death! But It Did Change My Fishing Plan A Little! Lol! So, Instead Of Going To Burkesville And Working My Way Up, I Went Straight To Wolf Creek **** Where I Knew We Could Get Into Them.
Because Of The Whole Babysitter Thing, I Got A Later Start Then I Wanted. We Arrived At The **** Around 1:00 Pm And The Flow Was Great! They Had The Slice Gate Open And That Was It! Perfect! After Setting My Little Girl Up With Some Rainbow Power Bait (i Know, I Hate The Stuff Too, But What Else Ya Gonna Do With A 5 Yr Old! Lol!) I Headed Out To Fish A Seam Where Several Trout Were Taking A Tiny (#22) Midge. I Took Several Nice Looking Bows On Top With A Midge Pattern, Then They Shut-down On Top. So, I Switched To A #16 Bh Hares Ear And Swung It Through The Seam Like A Wetfly. This Really Seemed To Drive Them Crazy! I Continued With This Method For Several Hours Catching One After Another...probably Caught 6 In The Slot...the Rest Smaller...all Bows. I Also Hooked Into Some Skipjacks Around 20 Inches In Length. I Had Never Caught Any Of Those Before...they Look Like A Little Tarpon Or Something! Weird!
All In All A Good Day With My Little Girl, Who Did End Up Catching Quite A Few On The Power Bait Stuff. Any Time With My Little Girl Is A Good Time! Hope To Try Again Next Week, Hopefully With A Babysitter, And Try Down Around Burkesville. Thanks Again For Your Input! Hagd!
