Canada trip next year

Me and some guys are looking at maybe going to Canada for a trip next year. Any suggestions on where to go and how to get started. Would love to try it once in my lifetime to say that i did. Need somewhere there are cabins too, they ain't much on roughin it. lol. Any direction would be greatly appreciated. They say its a trip of a lifetime and I am just itching to try it.

Go to Crow lake near Nestor Falls for smallies. Lake of the Woods is right across the highway. Best muskie lake in the world IMO.

We go every year. Matter of fact my buddies are going twice this year. I can't make it in August....we are expecting our first child. Anyway...I PROMISE you this is the best deal around. The fishing is UNMATCHED. You do not have to fly in but you do have to take a train ride through some of the best country you will ever see. Last time we went it was around 500.00 dollars per person.

I've been on about 8-9 trips now and the area we go to is stellar. We go every year last week of May to take advantage of the Memorial Day weekend and we also avoid the skeets before they get rock'n.

Other people say they crack them.....but they don't average 200 fish a day. Average smallie 2.5 lbs. All artificial w/ single barbless hook. One year we caught 434 in one day between two guys and that same year we caught 1800 smallies. This doesn't count the northern and walleye we catch to eat.

What are you wanting to fish for?

I go for musky and smallies. Crow is a nice lake to fish if you are after smallies and musky and it is some of the most beautiful water you will ever see. The lake trout aren't bad, but I don't spend much time on them. The problem with Crow Lake is that you will either hate it or love it. If staying on Crow, you also have the option to fish LOTW Stevens Bay and also a lake up the road called South Narrows that has some good smallies and northern in it.

I've always stayed at Crawfords Resort on Crow which is now Boreal Bay Lodge. There are 4 other resorts on the lake.

A little further north are some great lakes for smallies and walleye. Clay in one of them that I can think of. I believe it only has one lodge on it and it runs about $600 per person or so.

Thanks for the replies. We will be fishing mainly for smallies ,and walleye. Would also like to get into some of those huge muskys or pike. Just a trip I've always wanted to experience and figured i had better get started now on it. We figured on going in late may or june. Preference on months. When is the best time to go and how early do you all book the trip in advance.

Never thought about smallies. If you want to fish for them, Matt and Aarons place is to far north. We catch around 250-300 walleye and northern per day (2 boats with 2 men each). We have never seen another boat or fisherman while up there. You are really in the middle of nowhere! It really does not matter where ya go in Ontario, the fishing is great all over. But if you can find some place that is not "driveable" you will have better fishing on average. Ck out geofishers page that should get you going in the right direction. I have some fish Ontario mags, shoot me and IM if you would like them or want to call.

The trips up north have HUGE pike and fantastic walleye fishing. Smallies not so much. Fred is right on with the roads in/access to quality fishing ratio. I've heard of lakes that you have to bush-wack to get to with an inflatable canoe and they are like shooting fish in a barrel for numbers. Your best size and numbers will come from the big lakes that have the right water PH, rock structure, forage base, etc.

Water pH. When I fished Eagle Lake up in Ontario Canada I didn't think that much about the water's pH.

Today if I went back there that would be of interest to me.

Canadian Shield lakes may not be able to neutralize acids in the water do to the lack of Calcium Carbonate, limestone.

The Glaciers moved the top soil off those igneous rocks, (granite) and shoved them to the South.

Eagle Lake had a lot of submergent vegetation growing in the River that feed the lake. And the area surround the lake had good top soil. I remember going into the Pine Forests that surrounded the area and finding mushrooms. And there were plenty of wild blueberry bushes that grew in the area.

Eagle Lake was a good fishing spot so you might give it a shot someday.

Back in 1970 it was about 50 Miles South of where the roads ended in Ontario. So it was relatively remote for that time period.

But the fly in lakes would have better fishing as they don't see as much pressure.

I remember one of my first trips to Ontario Canada we fished Red Lake. We went down this narrow river at night and ended up fishing a more remote lake. We camped out that night on a small island on this remote lake. It rained that night but I was OK as I had a cover that protected me from the rain. I did manage to loose on of my contact lenses and had to wear my eyeglasses for the rest fo the trip that week. That sucked LOL

We caught lots of fish. Many walleyes and lots of Northern Pike. I remember having a shore lunch and eating fresh walleyes that we caught that morning. Best tasting fish I have ever eaten. But food always seems to taste better when cooked and eaten outdoors while camping

If you do stay somewhere see if they offer the "AMERICAN PLAN". That includes your food along with the lodging. That's how they did things back in the early 1970's. Things may have changed a lot by now but you never know.

Only place I've been is Green Island Lodge. Great! I would go back anytime.
Meals are included and good accomodations.

I went to Eagle Lake in Ontario a few years back and it was perfect!! We went June 16-24 and caught plenty of smallies on topwaters and spinners along with many large (5-10lb.) walleyes. If they slowed any, the pike were there to pass the time. We caught over 250 fish on 3 different days! Even had one spot that we could catch 3-5 lb. smallmouths anytime of day, except one day when they weren't there. I switched to a 2 oz. swimbait and hooked into a 40 plus pound muskie!!

Stayed at the Ojibway reservation camp-great food and price was VERY fair!!

Have fun and take plenty of bug spray and extra lures!!
