    Cumberland River

    Hello,
I would like to take my 12 year old son to the Cumberland River for some wade (trout) fishing. Can I get some info?

    1. 2 spots to try and time of day to be wade fishing.

    2. I have a pair of waist high neopreme waders. I will need to buy my 12 yr old son a pair. What do you reccomend? Chest or hip?

    3. Spinning lures or live bait for my son.

    4. Flies, leaders etc for me. I have a 5 weight outfit.

    5. Friendly bait and tackle shop.

    6. Motel and food.

We be coming from Greenville thru Bowling Green.

    Thanks!

You'll want chest waders for both of you. Waist high wont hardly cut it. With spinning tackle, in line spinners and Berkley Powerbait will work. With fly gear, a #16 bead head copper john, prince, pheasant tail, or gold ribbed hare's ear nymph fished on a 6X tippet w/ a strike indicator will catch plenty. If you're coming from BG, you'll pass Strange bait and tackle at Burksville. Always good advice there. I'm not sure how well stocked they are with fly tackle though. Best motel near the dam is at Lake Cumberland State Park.

JoeB said it all except...You'll also want to throw lures like little cleo's, super dupers (size 502-503), kastmasters...silver/bronze work the best. You can wade the dam, helms, and places down around burksville. Capt. Gar Wicker has a nice place down by burksville. I don't have his number, but you can google cumberland river lodging burksville and find it quickly.

One of our fishin'.com guys took his 5 yr. old daughter down to the dam last week and caught a boat load of fish. She used powerbait.

    Good luck.

    1. WOLF CREEK DAM AND...WOLF CREEK DAM! DEFINETLY THE BEST PLACE TO CATCH TROUT. AS FOR TIME OF DAY, MORNING AND EVENING ARE ALWAYS THE BEST, BUT YOU CAN CATCH THEM ALL DAY LONG.

    2. CHEST WATERS ONLY! AND IF YOU ARE BUYING A PAIR...GET BREATHABLES...NOT NEOPRENE. THEY ARE MUCH MORE COMFORTABLE, AND ALLOW MOISTURE TO ESCAPE OUT, AND NOT IN.

    3. I PERSONALLY HOOK MY 5 YR OLD DAUGHTER UP WITH RAINBOW POWER BAIT AND SHE KILLS 'EM.

    4. I JUST RETURNED FROM WC DAM TODAY, AND SLAYED 'EM ON A RED BH PHEASANT TAIL #16 WITH A BH COPPER JOHN #20 DROPPER. I USED 5X FLOUROCARBON WITH A 1/2" THINGAMABOBBER STRIKE INDICATOR 4' UP. NO WEIGHT! FISH WERE SUSPENDED. I CAUGHT 10 IN THE SLOT, WITH ONE BOW GOING 22". ALL IN ALL, 10 BROWNS AND 30+ BOWS. I ALSO USE A 5 WT ROD. ALSO...THERE WAS A HUGE BLACK MIDGE HATCH #22-#24. IF YOU CAN GET ANY, I WOULD RECOMEND IT. THEY WERE BUSTING 'EM ALL AFTERNOON LONG!

    5. COULDN'T REALLY TELL YA. I TIE MY OWN FLIES, AND GET MY GIRL'S POWERBAIT AT THE WALMART HERE IN BG.

    6. BEST PLACE TO STAY IS DEFENITELY THE STATE RESORT PARK. IF YOU WANT TO CAMP, STAY RIGHT BY THE DAM AT THE CAMP GROUND. AS FOR FOOD, I WOULD BRING YOUR OWN. THERE'S ONE GAS STATION ABOUT 15 MILES FROM THE DAM BACK TOWARDS COLUMBIA/JAMESTOWN, AND THAT'S ABOUT IT!

    ***NOTE***
IF YOU ARE COMING THROUGH MY TOWN OF BG...DO NOT...I REPEAT....DO NOT GET OFF THE C-PARKWAY AND GO THROUGH BURKESVILLE TO GET TO THE WC DAM! IT TAKES FOREVER! INSTEAD, CONTINUE ON C-PARKWAY TO THE SECOND COLUMBIA EXIT AND HEAD SOUTH FROM THERE. IT'S MUCH QUICKER! TRUST ME....I'VE MADE THE DRIVE A MILLION TIMES! GOOD LUCK!
