What's the best Bang for my buck.........H and R single shot youth model any good or should I just buck up and buy a Remington 700 243 and let it last a lift time. Any help would be great.

I bought a .243 Rem 700 BDL as my first "deer rifle" and have used it most years out at the head of North Fork ever since. However, I was 16 and a full size rifle was not an issue.

If he is actually big enough to hold it to shoot offhand, I would get him a full size bolt action rifle. If he just isn't big enough, I would get him an Encore/Contender in .243 (or something with about that recoil). At least with an Encore, he could get other barrels and different sized stocks in the future. I also would get him something with a synthetic stock or a used rifle. I know I put too many knicks and dings on the Browning .22 I got brand new when I was 8.

Yeah, yeah ok, I overreacted. Still, the rules are clear, we all agreed to them before we were allowed to post, and if everybody posted stuff like this, it would quickly turn into something other than what it is, a FISHING discussion board.

Well sounds like someone's got some issues. I figured I would asked the question here since most of the guys that respond to most questions are hunters as well. And as you can see this forum is visited and has the best responce of all others combined. If it bothered you that much then you didn't have to open and read it.

Maybe I should asked the question another way, My son has a used zebco 33 that I am looking to upgrade and trade even for a deer rifle to my neighbor, what gun should I go with the H and R or Remington. Now he really loves this 33 and has caught hundreds of fish with it but I am in need of some adivce on which gun would be better for him.

Thanks Road Toad for setting me straight

Yep the .243 would be my choice as well. It packs a punch but he will grow into it and of course out of it!

I purchased my son a Rossi Triple Threat. It is a single shot with three interchangeable barrels a .243, a .22 and a .410. Good price, excellent youth firearm.

Re: Looking to buy 9 yr old deer rifle?

When my son started hunting ( about 9 years old ) I bought him the H&R youth model chambered in .308. He loved shooting that rifle because there was not much recoil and he harvested several deer with it up until last year when he began using his Remington .300 Win Mag. (He's 15 now).

*On a side note * This may be a fishing board but if any question involves getting a youth involved in the outdoors (Whether it be fishing or hunting), it should not be questioned with a snide comment. The youth are the future of the outdoor activities that we all cherish and we as sportsmen should fully support that. JMTCW........

The .243 is a tack driver. It is tapped for a scope and I put one on and had it bore sighted. It didn't take long to get it dead center at 100 yards.

One thing I have noticed is the loads. My son shoots Remington Core Locs in 100 grain and he has killed three deer with it. Two he shot in the shoulder and dropped them, but the one that didn't hit shoulder bone left very little blood trail and was a tough tracking job. There doesn't seem to be much expansion in this load, but the accuracy is very good.

Perhaps someone that is a handloader could experiment with relaods that would probably produce better results.

BTW, I think you can order the .243 barrel to fit the firearm you have (which I believe is called a Matched Pair).
