Democrats and Gas??

Though the president has the power to veto those bills before they become law. If the congress does not have a 2/3 majority to over ride the veto, the bill does not become law.

As far as gas prices, a weaker dollar, supply/demand, speculators, OPEC determines the prices we pay. President/congress does not have that much say, if any.

btw, I gotta see those figures on gas prices tripling in the last 18 months. Was around $2 when bush took office.

According to the article I read the national average for gas when Bush took office was 1.69.9 per gallon. That means Deisel has more than tripled. No congress and the president don't set prices but they have the ability to try and do something about it don't they??? But instead this Democratic congress elects to do absolutely NOTHING. Don't you think it's ironic that gas dropped drastically on the barrel the day that Bush even made a symbolic threat towards drilling, can you imagine what would happen if we actually approved. And that supply and demand garbage doesn't wash anymore. All surveys taken in the last 6 to 9 months have showed a significant drop in oil use. In fact I think that entire thing was a farse from day one.

Mark, I think you are mixing up a few things. Gas was $1.69 when Bush took office. What was diesel? Don't think you can compare the gas and diesel prices. Also, it was not at that level when the dems won a larger part of the house and senate. Your data indicates that gas has gone up roughly 240% since Bush took office. Honestly, I don't think we can blame him for the increase.

As I mentioned elsewhere, the dems do not have enough to override a veto, so they are not as in as much control as some would suggest. In any case, what can either party do? This is a capitalist society after all.

Supply and demand, I agree its gone down. It certainly is an issue, but not the whole story. Prices have been dropping lately do to the lower demand.

You want to really see oil/gas prices drop, rather than making a symbolic threat for drilling (which would not put more oil out there for years and could likely go somewhere other that the US anyway), take a tough stance on alternative fuel sources. While gas prices are high, a number of alternative fuel sources become more feasible. Drop gas prices and folks will stop thinking so much about other sources of fuel.
