Fall Catfishin Help
I have been sick a lot this summer and have not got to fish as much as I normally do.![]()
I am usually duck hunting in the fall, so I don't know what to expect with the fishing. I just wondered if the big cats move into the shallows in October like they do in May.
My camp is fairly close to Nickle branch and the cannal ,going down Oct 4 to 18th
Will be jugging , but would like to catch some on the rod![]()
Any advice appreciated. // MISS HAVING CATFISH in the freezer eH![]()

I am not much of a cat fisherman but a few years back when my kids were a bit younger and more interested in fishing (they are mid-teens now) we used to take a cast net and catch threadfin shad for catfish. We would take those shad out to river channel drops around the mouths of the bays and fish straight down 15 - 30 ft deep on the river channel drop offs and catch blues and channels. We would also catch some other bonus species doing that and they had lots of fun with it.
You said something about catfish shallow -- being a bass fisherman I know that in late spring / early summer I catch a lot of channels on bass lures up on rocky banks as they come up to spawn. I am not aware of a big movement shallow by fall catfish like that but with the shad coming up as the water cools I would imagine some of the channels follow them on to the flats just like bass, crappie, and whites...
