Ky lake topwater?

Would some of you guys that fish that impoundment share your go to topwater bait for the fall?
I hope to get there in early Oct. and would like a heads up on what I may or may not need to buy.

I'm there every year in the fall, and without a doubt it's a lucky craft sammy in ghost pearl lemon. All of the good bait stores out there sell them but I've bought them at backwaters in lex. before. Also, fish a spinnerbait below the baitfish schools. We have been going around the second week of October for a while now but and the bite has been hit or miss. According to Dave, the better bite is actually later October and early November for that topwater bite. Good Luck to You

Buzzer. Sammys are good too - I love the strikes you can get on them but I can cover more water and put more fish in the boat with buzzers. Parallel and burn the banks...

Is one lake better than the other? I know the northern Barkley Buzzard Rock area better than KY lake. What about navigation that time of year?

Man what an open ended question -- is one lake better than the other. That's kind of like asking which one of your kids you like better!

Both lakes have their pluses and are similar in ways and very different in ways. My place is on Barkley so I tend to fish it a bit more and fishing it tends to be more visual there -- you can relate to banks and structure more directly. KY lake tends to have more offshore fishing which can be more of a challenge (to me). I think the LM population is a bit stronger on Barkley. I know I have caught more and bigger LM on Barkley but since I fish it more than may not be a fair comparision. KY lake shines with its SM fishery. I have caught several large SM on Barkley over the years -- to contrast I have had several trips to KY and have limited or nearly limited on 4+ smallies. October is shifting gears on this next thought but I enjoy night fishing and KY again is a much better night lake. Both are great lakes and I don't think you can go wrong either way.

The best of the two is which ever one the fish are biting on today...that is my canned answer to that age old question. Fact is, one lake can be on fire and the other not or vice versa at any time. They are two different lakes entirely...they fish the same in some aspects and sometimes completely different. I assume you are coming down for a tournement or you just like to have a lot of company because the week you are coming you will have plenty of company with tournaments here.

As for navigation....stay inside the navigation bouys...that is what they are there for. Getting outside the navigation bouys and not knowing where you are on these lakes anytime is asking for trouble...in October the lakes should be nearing winter pool...even more reason to use common sense and stay inside the buoys.

I would suggest you hire a guide to get you oriented here...the price of a guide trip is much cheaper than a new lower unit or worse. Sorry, I am already booked up that whole week...but will make a recomendation for you if you contact me.

All Custom baits. The best one is a weighted saltwater popping cork and custom fly that sinks just a little. Deadly for schooling fish and outperforms the sammy 5:1.

I also use a custom white sammy that is just slightly larger than the than the LC100 and a little smaller than the 120. I don't catch the small ones if you get me.
