Gator Season

Since moving from Lexington Kentucky to South Carolina's low country I have experienced some new things. One thing is the prospect of being hunted while hunting for bass. Down here on Santee Cooper lakes and the Cooper River there is an over abundance of large alligators. South Carolina has opened up a the first permit hunt for gators in over 40 years.

Those were big gators. Saw quite a few on the Louisiana Delta, but not sure we saw any that big.

You can keep all those critters down there, you need to have eyes like a chameleon. One eye watching that green line and the other looking for eyeballs in the water. Thanks but no thanks.

Buddy I'm with you! I grew up down south (Charleston and Orlando) and I can't believe I played and water skied in those waters! Not again no way no how. I have become a chicken as I got older, don't want to tempt fate with those gators. I feel safe in KY! No sharks, no gators, no problem.

When I lived in LA. I fished toledo bend alot hooked up with a couple of gators on top water in lillypads. When I went down towards the gulf for some redfish I would see some gators every trip at least 10 to 15 in the cannals right where I would see people using cast nets for shrimp on the shore. They would have there kids playing around in the grass next to the water and on the other bank about 50 feet away a big gator sunning himself. I always kept a pistol on me when I went down there After I saw one come out of the water after a adult cow.

I was on Santee for 9 days back in April. I could tell you exactly where to find two different 12+ footers. One down by the canal and one in Jack's creek. Fishing around something that can eat you is a very weird feeling!
