Last DUMB KY Lake Question.........I promise...... :)

So, I'm going to be staying at the top of the lake.....I like that AREA, and have enough to fish if the lake gets UGLY.........and I don't mind pulling off, and trailering to another ramp.

I've only EVER used the LBL ramps........I know.........WHAT a TOOL. BUT I like the LBL side better, and HATE crossing the lake.....I know again.....TOOL .

Here is my question...........Can I pretty much run across the Top of the lake anywhere......I really mean above Pisqua....REALLY close to the **** area.

I'm thinking of using the KY DAM Village State Park Ramp/Marina Area, and jumping over to Pisqua area, etc, etc.........

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Geo

The short answer to your question (in my opinion!) is NO. There is some pretty shallow water at the current level of 355.6 out in the middle of the lake, even that far North. By shallow, I am talking about 3 ft or in places a little less. There is a crossover lane between Sledd Creek and Little Bear (about at the Canal on the LBL side) and another from the Moors to Smith Bay. Obviously, it is your boat and your life, but ....

    Thanks........

That is pretty much what I thought too, but I thought there might be a little deeper water towards the dam.

I will probably just drive down trace and use ramps I've used in the past. NO BIGGIE. The thing I REALLY hate is being caught on the lake in bad weather, as my boat is really not capable of handling KY when it is UGLY.

    AGAIN, THANKS.

I agree with the water pulled down and big waves stay in the buoys. You can also cross at Ky Dam Marina. There are several bays on the LBL side that have boat ramps. I do not know how save your car is at the ramps but I have not heard of any problems.

Keep those dumb questions coming especially those that may save your boat or life.

I've used a lot of ramps on the LBL side..........Pisqua, fenton, sugar, smith.....I was wanting to stay in calvert city, and put in at KY village, and fish LBL side.

I will probably still stay in calvert city, but drive the trace.

    Thanks,

    Geo

    George,
I was down there this weekend and you can come out of KY Dam Village and cut diagonally across to the canal and down the LBL side with no problem at all!
I've done this several times and even when the lake is at winter pool. It will get a bit shallow, but never saw water under 6-8 feet. Really the main lake is not bad for crossing---but if you are still worried there are several places you can cross using bouys.
    1) go out of KY Dam Village and go towards dam and follow the bouys across the dam and into the main channel on the LBL side.
2)go down past Sledd and look for the big white sign on the right side bank and then look left and you will see red-green markers--cross there.
    3) go down the small channel to Moors and then follow the diagonal bouys to the LBL side.
Those I know are safe for sure!
GPS really helps---I love my Lowrance 522! Makes running both of those lakes so much more fun!

    Gary,
Let's do one in October. I'm going down with family to Dale Hollow early to mid October. We are going to camp out on one of the islands Friday Oct. 24th with the kids then head back to Barren.....I think....this is all pending cabin availability and permission from the in-laws.

We can stick some good fish on Barren about then. I'll email you. We could fish Saturday evening and Sunday morning.

You can always put in @ Nickel Branch on barkley side (LBL) and shoot thru the canal onto KY it would only take a minute or two, but don't run too fast thru the canal or you will pass up some great fishing....

Re: Last DUMB KY Lake Question.........I promise...... :)

I'll be down there in a few weeks. I'm an out of stater, never been on the lake. I have read the responses and any clarificaiton would be appreciated.

Is this the channel area to avoid the shallower water marked with red and green buoys? If not, will my navionics lead me the right direction to avoid trashing my boat first run out?

    Thanks.

Geo is NO LONGER going this weekend.

Without any power, and a NEW roof needed, I think I will be staying home this weekend. Maybe a local daytrip, but I REALLY NEEDED a KY trip.

    later,

    Geo
